ASA WA Branch X-mas X-citement!
It’s time to celebrate our WA Branch successes, farewell 2018 and plan for 2019. This is a joint Christmas event for our ASA’s WA Branch, School Archives SIG and the Collections of Faith Traditions SIG.
Lots to share with you… about our Perth ASA Conference, get you prepared for both ASA’s 2019 international conference, and our very own Perth Heritage Conference in 2019.
More importantly it’s time to unwind and celebrate the end of year with X’Mas drinks whilst enjoying the river views from the Royal Perth Yacht Club.
We invite allied professionals to join us in this yearend festive celebration.

Picturing Australia through the lens of E.L. Mitchell
E.L. Mitchell’s stunning photographs of Western Australia have been widely published in books and in exhibitions. While many recognise his photographs, few people know much about who he was, or how and why his work became so important.
In this highly illustrated talk, Joanna will introduce the life and work of the photographer E.L.  Mitchell, show some of his photographs and explain how they have been used.


Joanna Sassoon is an internationally respected historian and archivist. She has managed archival collections in cultural institutions in Western Australia and Canberra, worked in social policy research in the State and Commonwealth public service, and has taught in several universities. Her research has resulted in award-winning papers on photography, oral history, and heritage, environmental and Australian history. Her first book Agents of Empire. How E.L. Mitchell shaped Australia which in 2018 has won the Margaret Medcalf Award from the SRO and the Mander Jones Award from the ASA.

Joanna will bring copies of her book for purchase ($44 cash only) and autograph at the event.
