Dear Information Studies' students

This is an important email for both Curtin enrolled students and Open Universities Australia (OUA) enrolled students needing to undertake a practicum. Apologies for cross-posting, this email has been sent to students in a variety of ways. We hope this email reaches students who may have missed other messages.

Applications for summer practicum placements are due by Monday 5 October, 2015. Please return your application documentation as soon as possible. Instructions on the application process are provided below. If you have already submitted your application, thank you. You can ignore this email.



*PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN INFO5023 INFM510/INFO5022 MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION SERVICES (MIS) AND HAVE NOT COMPLETED A PLACEMENT OR SUBMITTED DOCUMENTATION PLEASE MAKE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE PRACTICUM COORDINATOR, BEC SHILLINGTON, YOU WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN A PILOT PROGRAM FOR AN ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY TO SUBMIT PRACTICUM DOCUMENTATION.



PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, YOU NEED TO HAVE READ THE OCC CIRCULATED ON THURSDAY 10 SEPTEMBER RELATING TO COURSE CHANGES AND YOU NEED TO HAVE COMPLETED (for yourself) THE DIY STUDY PLAN, PRIOR TO SUBMITTING PRACTICUM DOCUMENTATION.

If you are not sure whether you need to undertake a practicum at this time, please read on as this is explained below. Do you need to undertake a practicum at this stage?

Undergraduate students:

Are you enrolled (or intending on enrolling) in the new third year practicum unit INFO3009 LIM350 Information Services Professional Practicum in SP1, 2016 or INFO3008 Information Services Professional Practicum in semester 1, 2016 and want to do a placement prior to the unit? YES/NO

Have you previously completed Introduction to Libraries (now defunct unit) and not completed a first year practicum? YES/NO

Are you currently enrolled in INFO3004 LIS330 Information Theory & Research in SP3, 2015 or INFO3001 Information Theory & Research in semester 2, 2015 and not yet completed a practicum? YES/NO

Are you enrolled (or intending on enrolling) in INFO3004 LIS330  Information Theory & Research for SP1, 2016 or INFO3001 Information Theory & Research for semester 1, 2016 and do not have the new third year practicum unit, INFO3009 LIM350 Information Services Professional Practicum or INFO3008 Information Services Professional Practicum in your study plan? YES/NO

If you answered YES to any questions then you are required to undertake a two-week full-time practicum (first year students) and three week full-time practicum (third year students).


Graduate Diploma and Master of Information Management students (MIM):

Are you currently enrolled in INFO5030 INFM130 Information Theory & Research in SP3, 2015 or INFO5009 Information Theory & Research in semester 2, 2015 and not yet completed a practicum? YES/NO

*Are you currently enrolled in INFO5023 INFM510 Management of Information Services for SP3, 2015 or INFO5022 Management of Information Services for semester 2, 2015? YES/NO and not yet completed a practicum? YES/NO PILOT PROGRAM, CONTACT BEC

Are you enrolled (or intending on enrolling) in INFO5030 INFM130 Information Theory & Research for SP1, 2016 or INFO5009 Information Theory & Research for semester 1, 2016? YES/NO

Are you enrolled (or intending on enrolling) in INFO5023 INFM510 Management of Information Services for SP1, 2016 or INFO5022 Management of Information Services for semester 1, 2016? YES/NO

Are you enrolled in the pre-2015 Masters in Information Management (MIM), undertaking the dual qualification in librarianship AND records management/archives, AND required to undertake your second practicum before SP1 or semester 1, 2016? YES/NO

If none of the above, are you intending to complete your course this year AND have yet to complete the practicum requirements?  YES/NO

If you answered YES to any questions then you are required to undertake a three-week full-time practicum (graduate diploma and MIM).


Students need to make arrangements for leave from work and/or childcare in order to undertake the practicum. However, there may be some flexibility for exceptional cases where it is not possible to undertake the practicum full time or during the time periods outlined in the Practicum Manual. Please contact the Practicum Coordinator as soon as possible should you have any queries or concerns regarding these requirements.

Please read the Practicum Manual very carefully, particularly the section on 'Procedures for Organising Placements' as it provides detailed instructions on the application process. You must complete and return the Practicum Application Form, a CV and the Contact Details Spreadsheet. It is important that you read all instructions carefully and complete and return all forms correctly so as not to delay the organisation of your placement. Incomplete or incorrect forms will be returned to you for correction, which may mean missing out on your preferred placement venue. Please take care to ensure the CV contains, or has attached, a copy of the units you have studied, are currently studying and will study. ALL completed documents MUST be emailed as attachments to prac.infostud at curtin.edu.au<mailto:prac.infostud at curtin.edu.au>  from your Curtin email address. The Application Form should be completed electronically. Please note you must follow the correct procedure for subject lines of emails and file names of all attachments; this is outlined in the Manual.

Please submit the required documentation by the deadline: Monday 5 October, 2015.

If you wish to apply for an exemption from, or variation to, the practicum placement based on your work experience, you must submit an application by Monday 5 October, 2015. Please refer to the 'Exemptions and Variations' section of the Practicum Manual for the criteria and guidelines for applications. If applying for an exemption, you must enrol in the relevant unit anyway as there are other coursework requirements to complete.
