Dear Students
The Dept of Information Studies supports this event. I am currently organising a bus to take those students who wish, up to New Norcia and back. I will contact you with further details as soon as they come to hand.
Classes are usually cancelled for the day as most of the staff also attend the lecture. Kerry will most certainly be there as she is presenting this year!
Please note that to attend the New Norcia Library Lecture you need to register directly with Sue Johnson, as per the details in the email below.
Please mark the day in your diary. I attended last year and it was a fantastic day, with hearty country fare, great company, a scenic bus ride and an opportunity to explore New Norcia.

Subject: [WAIN] coherent New Norcia Library lecture information
It is time to register for the 2011 New Norcia Library Lecture on Friday September 9
Our speakers, Roxanne Missingham from the Federal Parliamentary Library in Canberra and our very own Kerry Smith, from the Department of Information Studies at Curtin University, are both key people in Australian librarianship.
And as a one-off treat, the abbot has invited us through the monastery gates into the cloister to visit four special rooms which are normally not open to public gaze. We will visit the baroque- style library, the wood-panelled refectory, the frescoed chapter room and the monks' reference library.
Roxanne's lecture topic is How many roads must a library walk down? The lecture will cover the "roads" we have pursued to create access, the messages which can and could be sent through signposts along the way, some insights into analysis of user behaviour on the Parliament of Australia's website and comments on the benefits of moving from information martyrs to natives.
Inspired by the achievement of Cadel Evans, Kerry's topic is Preserving the information commons: libraries, Google and monks.
For only $77, or $33 for a student, you will visit special areas of the monastery, hear stimulating lectures, network with colleagues from across the library spectrum, enjoy morning tea and buffet lunch, and have free entry to the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery. We need registration and pre-payment by September 2. See below for a registration form.
Registration is at 10 a.m. followed by the lectures. The tour of the monastery is after lunch with afternoon tea at 3 p.m.
Please RSVP by email to library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au <mailto:library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au> or by post to Sue Johnson, New Norcia Library, New Norcia, WA 6509. Receipts and ALIA-approved P.D. certificates will be provided on the day of the lecture. Tax invoices will be provided on request. For further details, contact me by email, or by phone me Wednesdays to Fridays on 9654 8060.
