Dear Students
The Dept of Information Studies supports this event and we normally
arrange for a bus (sometimes shared with State Library) to take those
who wish, up to new Norcia and back . We also cancel classes for this
day as most of the staff attend the lecture.
Rebecca Shillington will be the Info Studies contact and she will email
you further details on the bus once they come to hand.
Please mark the day in your diary. It's an interesting day, good
country food, good company, nice chatty bus ride, and gives you the
opportunity to have a look at a place you may not normally visit.
More soon
Regards
Kerry

UNSCANNABLE,NOT VIRUS SCANNED] New Norcia Library Lecture 2010
You are invited to register for this year's New Norcia Library Lecture
on Wednesday SEPTEMBER 8.
The incisive and insightful GERALDINE DOOGUE, from ABC radio and
television, will talk on "The Virtues of Looking Beyond the 24 Hour News
Cycle."
I have watched the media domination of the current political campaign
and the way it has resulted in the triumph of style over substance. I
think that the time to discuss this topic is now, and that Geraldine
Doogue is the right person to raise it. Geraldine, a journalist and
broadcaster for over 30 years, has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship
for social and cultural reporting, and has an Order of Australia for
services to the community and media. She has made room in an overflowing
schedule to make a flying visit to New Norcia to present this lecture.
Our prestigious afternoon speakers will raise issues to stimulate
professional awareness and discussion.
MARGARET ALLEN, CEO of the State Library of Western Australia and Vice
President / President Elect of ALIA will speak about national challenges
in librarianship.
JAN RUTHERFORD, Manager Liaison Services at Murdoch University, will
talk about the provision of services by her university library.
GERALDINE BYRNE, historian and author, will tell us what she requires
from libraries as a researcher and as a private individual.
For yet another year, the cost stays at $77 for adults, and $33 for
students - which is excellent value for a day of professional
development. For this, you can hear excellent speakers, contribute in
the discussion session, network with colleagues from across the library
spectrum, enjoy morning tea and buffet lunch, and have free entry to the
New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery. Incidentally, this year lunch in St
Ildephonsus" College will be provided by the New Norcia Hotel.
Morning tea is at 10 am and proceedings end at 3 pm.
Registration and payment by August 31 are essential to facilitate
catering. Attached are two versions of the registration form: one is an
interactive PDF attachment for return by email, and one is a standard
PDF attachment for those who prefer to print and post.
Please RSVP by email to library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au or by post to Sue
Johnson, New Norcia Library, New Norcia, WA 6509. Receipts and
ALIA-approved P.D. certificates will be provided on the day of the
lecture. Tax invoices will be provided on request. For further details,
contact me by email, or by phone on 9654 8060 Wednesdays to Fridays.
