ALIA NSW MENTORING program - Applications now open!
Being a protégé or mentor is a rewarding experience that can be undertaken by anyone regardless of age, and where you are in your career. The NSW Mentoring Program is open to everyone in NSW, and we'll do our best to support you regardless of location. Please read on and see whether this program could benefit you.
ON BEING A PROTÉGÉ...
At any time you could need advice, someone to talk to, guidance, even a kick in the pants! A mentor could be what you need. You'd be in touch with your mentor on a regular basis (face to face, by email or phone) to discuss particular issues. People have mentors for a whole range of reasons. You may like a mentor to provide advice on how to network, write and present conference papers, manage staff or learn a particular skill you need for a new job. In an environment of confidentiality and mutual respect, the working relationship between you and your mentor will probably grow to include a range of topics.
At our social events you'll get the chance to meet and talk with other protégés and mentors - an easy way to meet new people.
ON BEING A MENTOR...
Becoming a mentor is a great way for you to get involved in the development of another professional. You'll draw on the skills, experience and knowledge you've gained over the years to guide and challenge your protégé. Don't feel like an expert or particularly wise?
You may just surprise yourself! Sometimes it's not until you begin in a role like this that you realise how much you know about the library and information profession! Do you have a colleague you think would make a great mentor but they're not confident enough to come forward? Why not mention this to them - your encouragement may be what they need to get involved.
Giving back to the profession can be a very rewarding experience - give it a go and be rewarded!
Applications for the 2007 - 2008 program are now open but close on Friday 4th May 2007
For more information and application forms, please see our website http://www.alia.org.au/groups/mentoringnsw/
Don't forget if you're in the PD scheme, you'll also receive points towards your accreditation!
