This one is for Adelaide folk for a change -
The APS SA Branch is hosting a Psychology Week public event at the Adelaide Hilton on Asylum Seekers and Refugees: The Journey, the Challenges, and the Adjustment After Trauma
http://www.psychology.org.au/PsychWeek/EventView.aspx?ID=3586
The APS has been actively expressing deep concern for more than 12 years about the harmful effects of immigration detention (particularly offshore) on the mental health of asylum seekers, particularly children. We have recently supported the call of doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital http://www.psychology.org.au/news/media_releases/16Oct2015/ for all children and families in detention to be released into the community while their refugee status is determined and agree that appropriate care cannot be provided in a detention environment.
Jointly with other health professions, the APS has also issued a statement urging the Australian Government to ratify the UN’s Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT)
http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2015/oct/16/medical-bodies-call-for-all-places-of-detention-to-be-opened-up-to-scrutiny and called for the Border Force act to be amended
http://www.psychology.org.au/news/media_releases2015/15June/.
Earlier this year, the APS welcomed the release of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s report, The Forgotten Children, and called for all children in immigration detention to be released immediately:http://www.psychology.org.au/news/media_releases2015/12Feb/.
Further information can be found on more than a decade of APS advocacy on refugee issues here http://www.psychology.org.au/community/public-interest/refugees/.
