Dear all,

May I take this opportunity to remind you all about the National Day of
Action:

Stop the NT Intervention - Sorry means you won't do it again.
Protest: Saturday, February 13, 2010

taking place that day in Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth
and Sydney. For further information and details on venues, contacts,
speakers etc. please visit the Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney
(STICS) website at http://stoptheintervention.org/.

Also please note that at the protest in Adelaide, Alice Springs and Sydney
the book "This Is What We Said" will be launched. This book is a follow-up
to the report called "Will They Be Heard?" launched in November 2009 by the
Hon. Malcolm Fraser. Using pictures and quotations taken from footage of
actual consultations at Bagot, Ampilatwatja, Utopia and Yirrkala, this book
provides a graphic account of the depth of frustration and despair of many
Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory regarding the Intervention. It
is therefore tragic that legislation, about to be debated in Parliament,
pays scant attention to the views expressed by many Aboriginal people during
the consultations process of 2009. For further information please check:
http://stoptheintervention.org/facts/films-and-literature/book-this-is-what-we-said

An email apparently circulated by a person connected to the Minister's
office widely calling for people to appeal to members of the Opposition and
the Greens to support the new legislation so that the reinstatement of the
Racial Discrimination Act (RDA) will not be delayed, has created huge
concerns for many people. Income management will be expanded even further in
an attempt to restore the RDA. There appears to be no attempt to develop
legislation based on Australia's public support for the United Nations
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Submissions to the Senate Inquiry from experts in human rights law, from
large national welfare providers as well as Aboriginal organisations have
raised serious concerns about the proposed laws, concluding that these new
laws will not restore the RDA and do not meet our international human rights
obligations. Please have a look at the submissions at
http://www.aph.gov.au/senate/committee/clac_ctte/soc_sec_welfare_reform_racial_discrim_09/index.htm.

There have already been a number of public responses, including from
prominent Australians like Les Malezer, Greens Senator Rachel Siewert, Neil
E Gillespie, Professor Alastair Nicholson and many more which you will find
at http://stoptheintervention.org/rda-new-legislation.

Should you wish to have your comment added to the STICS website, please feel
free to either respond to me directly or by sending it to
stoptheintervention at gmail.com.

Finally, please find an Invitation to attend the opening of the Alyawarr
protest house taking place on Feb 14, 2010 as well as further information
about the Alyawarr walk off at http://interventionwalkoff.wordpress.com/.

Would you please circulate this message to all your networks, as widely as
possible?

Sincerely,

Sabine Kacha
