Dear LARIS students,

Happy Monday!

Here’s another great opportunity to add to your professional learning calendar!

The CRIG Seminar 2025 (by CAVAL<https://www.caval.edu.au/>) is coming up soon, and this year’s program, too, looks fantastic! Across three short sessions on 18, 19, and 20 November, you’ll hear from library professionals and researchers on themes such as belonging, equity, open educational resources, and innovation in library services: all topics that are shaping the future of inclusive libraries!

The seminar is entirely online, so you can join from anywhere.

Even better, as current LIS students, you can get half-price tickets using the code STUDENTCRIG25 at checkout.

You can find all the details and registration links in the attached flyer (and below). The flyer has several clickable links to the registration pages (‘register’). To avoid confusion each day has been set up as its own Zoom event, so you’ll need to register for each day you are attending.

This is a great chance to engage with the key conversations in the field and learn from professionals across the sector.

Any questions? Please email members at caval.edu.au<mailto:members at caval.edu.au>
Best,
Ellie

CRIG SEMINAR 2025 | Open Doors, Open Minds: Shaping Inclusive Library Futures
The CRIG Seminar returns this year with the 2025 theme exploring how libraries can unlock potential by highlighting equity, openness, and critical practice, from supporting diverse communities and challenging the status quo to experimenting with emerging technologies. The range of keynotes, lightning talks, and shorter presentations will focus on Open Educational Resources (OERs), workplace trauma and challenging behaviour, personal experiences, and innovative services.

In November, the annual CRIG Seminar will once again be held across three days, where each day will have a virtual session ranging from 120 to 135 minutes. There is also a chance for you to show off your creative prowess through the DIY Raven Competition. All the details you need are included in the attached flyer and below.

Day 1. Belonging in Libraries

Tuesday 18 November, 2.00 – 4.00pm AEDT / 1.00 – 3.00pm AEST

The first webinar of the CRIG Seminar virtual series is all about belonging in libraries, with a particular focus on Indigenous students, staff, and researchers as well as library staff. Dr Jane Garner will open the 2025 CRIG Seminar with a keynote focusing on workplace trauma and challenging behaviour, before we shift focus to a duo of lightning talks/pecha kuchas by Ennis Chen, Sarah Sherman, and Dr Paula Muraca. Carl Buttler will conclude the webinar by sharing his impressions from attending the International Indigenous Librarians Forum in Toronto earlier this year.

Day 2. Equity Through Access

Wednesday 19 November, 10.00am – 12.00pm AEDT / 9.00 – 11.00am AEST

The star of this mid-Seminar series webinar is Open Educational Resources (OERs) and we will be joined by two keynote speakers who will share their expert practice: Liam (Leigh) Frost-Camilleri (Federation University Australia) and Dr Amanda White OAM (University of Technology Sydney).

Day 3. Innovating for Inclusion

Thursday 20 November, 2.00 – 4.15pm AEDT / 1.00 – 3.15pm AEST

The 2025 CRIG Seminar will conclude with a series of presentations from Dr Lisa Cianci, Karl Ervine, Cait Burgoyne, Dominique Coorey, Ellen O’Hehir, and Aimee Clague, before Professor Kathomi Gatwiri gives the closing keynote which is expected to be a powerful conclusion to the webinar series. The winner of the Raven Competition<https://www.caval.edu.au/activity/crig-seminar-2025-raven-competition/> will also be crowned by popular vote by the audience.

Raven Competition 🐦‍⬛

Entries are invited until EOD on Tuesday 18 November

The raven is a potent symbol across diverse cultures. To connect the raven to our CRIG Seminar theme of Open Doors, Open Minds, we particularly point to the symbolism of ravens in Norse mythology. Odin (the All-Father) had two ravens, Hugin and Munin, which embody thought and memory and represent Odin’s wisdom and knowledge.

To take the theme of the raven further, we invite the CRIG Seminar community to enter a competition where they will create their own DIY Raven Mascot. The raven will act as a symbol of your intention to join the Seminar speakers and organisers in exploring what inclusive libraries should be in the future, to open doorways into library spaces, and contribute your knowledge and wisdom to these discussions.

How to participate:

Create a raven through your craft medium of choice (origami, crocheting, knitting, baking, needlework, clay, etc.).

Snap a photograph of your raven in a setting that exemplifies the theme of Open Doors, Open Minds.

Send the photograph, with a creator’s statement (max 200 words), to members at caval.edu.au<mailto:members at caval.edu.au> by EOD Tuesday 18 November.

By submitting an entry, you consent to the anonymised photograph of your raven being published on social media in the lead up to the CRIG Seminar and on CAVAL’s website afterwards.
