On Thursday 27 April 2023, Dr Joanna Sassoon will give a presentation on private family archives addressing the themes of emotion, meaning and significance. Family archives can be potent containers of emotion and information.
Through case studies that draw on various parts of her family archive that relate to the death of her father's brother in WW2, Joanna Sassoon will raise questions about family archives, why we keep them and what silences they can fill, how their meanings change over time and contexts, and what happens when they become institutionalised in private archive collections.
Joanna Sassoon has had a long and varied career working in state and national libraries, State Records Office WA, and other State and Commonwealth agencies. She has published widely, most recently about photographs and native title. She works for several universities and in her spare time is working with six families whose relatives were all in the same plane accident in which Joanna's uncle died. Her book Agents of Empire won a Mander Jones prize.
