Dear Students,
FYI this recruitment drive for student mentors.
Here is an opportunity for you to practice leadership skills and network with your peers and the LARIS discipline.
Our students benefit if we have a LARIS student mentor assisting them.
Give it some thought and add this achievement to your CV.
Regards,
Dr. Pauline Joseph, FRIM

Subject: Mentor Recruitment for Semester 2 new to Curtin students needs attention
Hello colleagues,
It is that time again when I am looking for your support to assist in the selection and recruitment of mentors for next semesters incoming students. Feedback has demonstrated that new students find having a mentor from their area of study very comforting and that it goes a long way in increasing the likelihood of students continuing in the course.
Engaging with the mentoring programme and the mentors from your course more closely will give you support when promoting and running extra and co-curricular activities. For example, mentors from the Art area assist with running an Orientation activity and from Theatre Arts with running a welcome BBQ for incoming students. I think we can go further with engaging our mentors in individual majors far more than we are now, but we can only do so if we have representation from each major in the school.
Benefits of becoming a mentor include:
* You will receive comprehensive training in the role and develop leadership, interpersonal, communication and cultural competency skills;
* Participate in a lifelong learning opportunity;
* Enhance your employability skills and your resume;
* Develop your organisation and time management skills;
* Develop your ability to build productive and collaborative networks, including with academic staff in your course;
* You get to support the success of fellow students and the university;
* You’ll also gain formal recognition from the University via a certificate of participation at the end of the semester, and on the Curtin Extra Certificate<http://graduations.curtin.edu.au/graduate/curtinExtra.cfm> when you graduate.
Please personally recommend becoming a mentor to students that you believe would be a good fit and promote the programme by adding the mentor recruitment slide to your lectures over coming weeks and by posting the information to your blackboard sites.
To save you some time here is the announcement I am posting to Theatre Arts bb sites:
Hi everyone,
I hope the semester is going well. I am currently seeking interest from any of you who might be interested in mentoring a group of next year’s first years. Ideally, we have a few mentors in Theatre Arts so that each mentor has about 10-15 mentees.
Ultimately, your role is to make our new Theatre Arts students welcome and feel part of the Hayman community. To do so you will show your mentees around on Orientation Day, send them regular emails throughout semester with tips on how to navigate the different things that come up being a new student, and host them at our semester welcome BBQ. You can also organise catch ups such as attending Hayman shows or whatever you think of. You will get to improve your leadership skills and have the opportunity to take some additional training in leadership. Previous mentors have told me they found the experience quite rewarding.
Information on the mentoring programme, benefits of becoming a mentor, and how to apply can be found here: http://life.curtin.edu.au/new-to-curtin/new-students-mentoring.htm
I highly recommend becoming a mentor. If you want any more info you can contact me directly as I coordinate the programme for our school.
Warm regards,
Phil.
