[Hum-DIS] Seeking WA Based student for participation in Curtin HIVE Internship Project

Dear Students,

Here is an opportunity for you to conduct research with Curtin researchers and Curtin Library professionals, plus again new skills in data visualization projects.

I am supervising this project with Peter Green and Amanda Bellenger from the Curtin Library. We will be working with data visualization experts from the Curtin HIVE, as well.

As part of a 2017 HIVE Internship program, Curtin Library has a data visualisation project working with the EZProxy log files dataset. We are seeking a student who is passionate to research, conduct data analysis, wants to delve into data visualisation, and work with us in this project.

Here are some details about the project.

  *   EZProxy is a software solution that provides access to the Library’s online resources (databases, e-journals, e-books). The EZProxy log files are available from 2013 to present, and contain a range of data about online resource usage including geographical location (mapped from IP addresses), date/time of use, search terms, and other fields.

This dataset may tell us various stories about how staff and students use the Library, for example:

  *   What are peak and off-peak time periods for usage of the virtual library? How do these patterns change from year to year?
  *   Where is the usage taking place geographically?
  *   Are there differences in activity for staff vs student usage?

By applying for a HIVE Internship, you will receive expert advice and training on visualisation software and hardware. To apply:

  *   You must be based in Western Australia
  *   You will need to be available for an intensive research period from November 27, 2017 to mid-February, 2018 (excluding the University closedown period in Dec/Jan)

  *   Complete the “HIVE Internships Student Application Form”

Key Dates:

  *   6th November    – Student Applications Due
  *   14th November – Students notified of results of project allocations
  *   28th November – Internships start (HIVE induction day)
  *   February              – Project presentations

If you are considering enrolling in our Honours program upon graduation or will be starting the Advanced Disciplinary Project 1 in semester 1, 2018, this research may be of interest to you. However, this opportunity is open to all our students who are interested in the project.
