Subject: Local Studies Volunteer Opportunity with Nedlands Library
Hello,
Nedlands Library is seeking expressions of interest from students enrolled in Library and Information Management courses to participate in a project to create an Online Historical Photograph Database for the City of Nedlands Local Studies Collection.
This project work is an opportunity to build up professional skills through volunteer work.
The database our Library is using for this project is OCLC ContentDM.
The work required from Library and Information Management students is primarily data entry and cataloguing photographs using a range of resources including old Accession Registers, donor copyright documents and the Library's AMLIB catalogue.
Students would cross-reference these resources, confirming that cataloguing is correct and then use this information to edit Excel spreadsheets for uploading photograph metadata to the Online ContentDM database.
The students would also have the opportunity to research topics of local historical interest.
For more information about OCLC ContentDM please see http://www.contentdm.org/
For an example of the kind of photographic database Nedlands aims to achieve, please see http://picture.southperth.wa.gov.au/cdm/
Nedlands Library would provide initial training in AMLIB modules and ContentDM functions, but after training is complete, the students are required to work largely unsupervised.
The students would need to commit to one or two days a week volunteer placement over a three month period.
The work would need to be undertaken between August-October 2014.
As a volunteer arrangement, the Library can accommodate up to six students as the students would work in rotating shifts.
The Library can provide morning tea facilities and financial reimbursement for the cost of transport to and from the Library.
If you have any queries please contact Nedlands Local Studies on 9273 3644 or email localstudies at nedlands.wa.gov.au<mailto:localstudies at nedlands.wa.gov.au>
Regards,
Amy Price
Local Studies Librarian
