Dear DIS Students,
The New Library Lecture for this year will be held on Friday Oct 4th. This is an event the Department of Information Studies has supported for many years, and it is something that provides excellent value and a memorable 'day out' in Australia's only monastic town. Students can attend at substantially discounted prices ($33) which includes morning and afternoon tea and lunch a well as access to the lectures.
The details are as follows:
The New Norcia Library Lecture is held annually to encourage sustained excellence in the field of librarianship.
The lecture creates a space for reflection in library and information science that is rare in a very practice driven profession. It encourages wide participation in thoughtful discussion on key issues and future directions. As a result, librarians who work in many different types of libraries attend the event.
The speakers will be:
*Claire Bolton of Alembic Press, UK
*Margaret Allen, CEO and State Librarian, State Library of Western Australia and
*Erica Persak, Executive Administrator for the Kerry Stokes Collection
Claire's lecture topic, From candle to kindle: articulating the text, explores some of the methods by which Biblical texts have been recorded and articulated through three millennia.
Margaret's lecture topic, State Library of Western Australia - the digital future explores different community expectations about accessing and using digital content in innovative and flexible ways.
Erica's lecture topic, A celebration of manuscripts in the Kerry Stokes Collection builds on our fantastic opportunity to be present at the launch of the newly installed exhibition, on loan form the Kerry Stokes Collection, to the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery.
Full details including registration are available at: http://www.newnorcia.wa.edu.au/education-and-research/library/new-norcia-library-lecture.html
Please note that the registration period has been extended.
There will also be a bus provided to ease the transport worries. There will be an additional charge fr the bus but again the intention is to provide some subsidy for students. If you are interested in the bus please contact Anthea Harris at localstudies at nedlands.wa.gov.au<mailto:localstudies at nedlands.wa.gov.au> as soon as possible.
Regards
Paul
