Dear Information Studies' students

This is an important email for both Curtin enrolled students and Open Universities Australia (OUA) enrolled students needing to undertake a practicum.
Apologies for cross-posting, this email has been sent to students in a variety of ways. We hope this email reaches students who may have missed other messages.
Applications for practicum placements are due by Friday 22 March, 2013. Please return your application documentation as soon as possible. Instructions on the application process are provided below. If you have already submitted your application, thank you. You can ignore this email.
If you are not sure whether you need to undertake a practicum at this time, please read on as this is explained below.

Do you need to undertake a practicum at this stage?

Are you enrolled in LIS100 Introduction to Librarianship in Study Period (SP) 1 , 2013 or Introduction to Librarianship 101 in semester 1, 2013? YES/NO

Have you previously completed Introduction to Libraries (now defunct unit) and not completed a first year practicum? YES/NO

Are you enrolled in LIS330/INFM130 Information Theory & Research in SP1, 2013 or Information Theory & Research 302/502 in semester 1, 2013 and have yet to complete the practicum requirement? YES/NO

Are you enrolling in LIS330/INFM130 Information Theory & Research in SP3, 2013 or Information Theory & Research 302/502 in semester 2, 2013? YES/NO

Are you enrolled in the Masters in Information Management (MIM), undertaking the dual qualification in librarianship AND records management/archives, AND required to undertake your second practicum before SP3 or semester 2, 2013? YES/NO

If none of the above, are you intending to complete your course this year AND have yet to complete your practicum requirements?  YES/NO

If you answered YES to the first question or the second question you will need to complete a two week full-time placement. Please submit your paperwork, please note that the bulk of first year placements for both OUA students and Curtin students will be organised for the OUA SP2, in particular July and for the Curtin mid-year break which is July, after students have completed the unit.

If you answered YES* to any of the subsequent questions then you are required to undertake a three-week full-time practicum (third year, grad dip and MIM students) before the start of SP3, 2013 (OUA students) or Semester 2, 2013. Students need to make arrangements for leave from work and/or childcare in order to undertake the practicum. However, there may be some flexibility for exceptional cases where it is not possible to undertake the practicum full time or during the time periods outlined in the Practicum Manual. Please contact me as soon as possible should you have any queries or concerns regarding these requirements.

*Please note that if you are an OUA student and enrolling in LIS330 or INFM330 in SP3, 2013 you will more than likely complete the three week full-time placement in SP4.

The following documents/files are available at this site. Please read the instructions below very carefully:
1. Practicum Manual
2. Practicum Application Form - including CV (must return via email)
3. Curtin Insurance Information Sheet (please read this to ensure you are familiar with the coverage)
4. Contact Details Spreadsheet - ensure student number and name columns are completed (must return via email)


Please read the Practicum Manual very carefully, particularly the section on 'Procedures for Organising Placements' as it provides detailed instructions on the application process. You must complete and return the Practicum Application Form, a CV and the Contact Details Spreadsheet. It is important that you read all instructions carefully and complete and return all forms correctly so as not to delay the organisation of your placement. Incomplete or incorrect forms will be returned to you for correction, which may mean missing out on your preferred placement venue. ALL completed documents MUST be emailed as attachments to prac.infostud at curtin.edu.au<mailto:prac.infostud at curtin.edu.au> from your Curtin email address. The Application Form should be completed electronically i.e. complete the details within the attached Word document. Please note you must follow the correct procedure for subject lines of emails and file names of all attachments; this is outlined in the Manual.

If you wish to apply for an exemption from, or variation to, the practicum placement based on your work experience, you must submit an application by Friday 22 March, 2013. Please refer to the 'Exemptions and Variations' section of the Practicum Manual for the criteria and guidelines for applications. If applying for an exemption, you must enrol in the relevant unit anyway as there are other coursework requirements to complete.
