CANBERRA

15 – 18 0CTOBER 2013

ARCHIVES: THE FUTURE
Exploring the environment and possibilities for records and recordkeeping<http://newsletter.brightlabs.com.au/t/r-l-bwftt-jkihhudlty-u/>

An exciting program of speakers and events is being put together for the 2013 ASA National Conference to held in Canberra in October. The theme of the conference is Archives: The Future focusing on current thinking in the archival community on reinventing archival methods to meet the demands of the digital age.

Conference sessions will have three speakers followed by a moderated discussion where the panel and participants can debate and discuss issues. A taste of this discussion was seen last week on the Archives and records Australia Google discussion list, with postings on fulfilling a vision to create an ‘Australian archival system’ that includes a voice for the non-government archives sector, looking at lessons from the Canadian experience and attempts to establish such a framework here. There are a number of sessions where this issue is likely to be raised and as Chris Hurely noted, the conference “might be an opportunity to fan the flames a little” on this question.

Events will commence on Tuesday 15 October with SIG meetings<http://newsletter.brightlabs.com.au/t/r-l-bwftt-jkihhudlty-o/> and a tour of Canberra in the morning; and the Loris Williams Lecture and the ASA Annual General Meeting<http://newsletter.brightlabs.com.au/t/r-l-bwftt-jkihhudlty-b/> and welcome reception at the National Film and Sound Archives in the afternoon. On Wednesday 16 & Thursday 17 October, the two day conference will be held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. On Friday 18 October, three workshops are being offered to participants.

The conference program<http://newsletter.brightlabs.com.au/t/r-l-bwftt-jkihhudlty-n/> is in a dynamic state as arrangements are finalised with speakers and topics confirmed. Please check the Conference page on the ASA website<http://newsletter.brightlabs.com.au/t/r-l-bwftt-jkihhudlty-p/> regularly for the latest program.

Canberra is celebrating its centenary and 2013 is proving to be an exciting time to visit the city with a wide range of activities being staged to commemorate the anniversary.
