Subject: [WAIN] Special Events, Perth WA: Finding and Preserving your Family History - Breakfast Seminar and Workshops - 21st & 23rd June 2012

Good Morning and apologies for cross posting.

Information Enterprises Australia in conjunction with Preservation Australia are running a series of events in June that may be of interest to you, your colleagues and members of your family:

On the 21st June 2012 we will be running:

Breakfast Seminar and workshop: Finding and Preserving Your Family History

Family history collections and archives are valuable, precious and unique. Passed on from generation to generation, they are generally a mixed collection consisting of documents and letters, photographs, books, textiles, and memorabilia such as watches, glasses, jewellery, wallets, medals, coins and the like. It is important that we preserve these collections as best we can, to pass them onto the following generations of our families.
.	What historic material do you keep?
.	How do you decide what is significant and what is less important?
.	How do you organise your collection?
.	Which database should you use?
.	What information should be entered?

Our breakfast seminar will provide a snapshot of this fascinating topic and will be followed by a more in-depth workshop on how to preserve your family history collection. If you have always wondered how to begin the process of finding your family history AND to understand how to begin to preserve your collection of material, then we would be delighted to have you join us for our breakfast seminar (details below).

However, sometimes the greatest challenge is finding out how to preserve your collection, and where to find the correct advice and storage material.

The workshop will specifically look at:
.	Why does your collection deteriorate?
.	What are the threats to your collection?
.	What is 'archival storage'? (de-mystifying the terminology used by suppliers)
.	What systems or methods of storage are available?
.	How do you choose the best method?
.	When do you need to use a conservator?

At the end of the day, participants will feel much more confident about archiving and preserving their family history.

And on the Saturday 23rd June 2012 we will be running the Family History Workshop again. Ideal for those people who have an interest in family history, but can't persuade your organisations to let you have the time off :-)

Our Presenter: Kay Söderlund

Kay has worked as a professional conservator for over 25 years. After graduating from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Applied Science in the Conservation of Cultural Material (majoring in paper and textile conservation) she worked at several of the major museums in Sydney, including the Australian Museum, Powerhouse Museum and the State Library of New South Wales, where she headed the project to conserve the Journals of the First Fleet for the 1988 Bicentennial celebrations.

For nearly 20 years Kay has worked privately in the museum sector, primarily as a conservator. She was one of the first conservators in Australia to recognise the role preventive conservation would play in the preservation of collections, and in 1992 trained in Preventive Conservation with the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, USA.

In 2000 Kay authored 'Be Prepared: Guidelines for Small Museums for Writing a Disaster Preparedness Plan', written for the Heritage Collections Council. She also developed the training package for industry service providers based on 'Be Prepared'. Both the manual and the training package are available on the AMOL (Australian Museums On Line) web site, www.amol.org.au

In August 2004, Kay established Preservation Australia - a conservation consulting, training and archival supply business - to provide a single point of contact for all preservation and conservation requirements, managed by a professional conservator.

Kind Regards

Lorraine
