Information Enterprises Australia will be running the Policy Writing for
Information Managers on the 16th November 2011 if you would like to join
us.

This one day course has been designed specifically to assist you, the
information manager, to hone your knowledge and skills in developing
sound organisational policies and guidelines. As well as presenting you
with some background information on the theory of policy development,
you will also be provided with a wide range of hints and tips aimed at
helping you write clear and practical policy documents.
The course makes use of presentations and discussions and individual and
group activities. There will also be a consideration and analysis of
policy issues. If you are grappling with any policy issues at present,
you might like to bring them along for the group to workshop.
Prerequisites:
When you come along, you will need to bring as many of the following as
possible:
* Your organisation's strategic plan or your organisation's statement of
purpose or vision/ mission and strategic outcomes or objectives;
* An understanding of your organisation's legislative context (if any);
and
* A copy of your organisation's Annual Report
This course will cover:
* The nature and importance of policy;
* The identification of policy issues;
* How to develop operational policies and guidelines; and
* How to structure policies and the best styles and language to use.
At the end of this course you will be able to:
* Understand the important role of policy and guidelines to an
organisation;
* Understand the different types of policy used in organisations;
* Identify when a policy is needed and use the appropriate tools and
processes to develop one; and
* Understand and apply techniques for writing clear, usable policy
documents suitable for your organisation.
At the end of this course you will have:
* A methodology to develop policies and procedures related to
information use and information management;
* Tools to assist you in identifying policy requirements and influence
of the context in which they will be developed and used; and
* A draft policy developed using the above methodology and the tools

Dr Janine Douglas is our course facilitator. Janine has more than twenty
years experience as a senior manager with extensive experience in policy
development, planning and performance management. During the course of
her career Janine has developed specialist skills in strategic planning,
policy development and service options for information and knowledge
management. In addition to developing courses for practitioners, Janine
has prepared tertiary courses for and lectured in records management.
