Good morning

If you would like a seat on the bus to New Norcia for the New Norcia
Library Lecture 2011 please email me (r.shillington at curtin.edu.au) with
your full name and mobile number to secure your place. I require
numbers by 9am on Monday 22 August.

Please note I am currently finalising arrangements with the State
Library of Western Australia - we usually share a bus with them. I
expect arrangements to be similar to last year with the bus departing
the State Library of Western Australia (Francis Street bus bay) on
Friday 9 September. Muster time 7.30am for a 7.45am departure and
leaving New Norcia at approximately 3.45pm, arriving back between 5.30
and 6pm. Details will be confirmed in due course.

Expected cost $10 cash, payable at the muster point.

Thank you and kind regards

Bec

Subject: [WAIN] coherent New Norcia Library lecture information

It is time to register for the 2011 New Norcia Library Lecture on Friday
September 9

Our speakers, Roxanne Missingham from the Federal Parliamentary Library
in Canberra and our very own Kerry Smith, from the Department of
Information Studies at Curtin University, are both key people in
Australian librarianship.

And as a one-off treat, the abbot has invited us through the monastery
gates into the cloister to visit four special rooms which are normally
not open to public gaze. We will visit the baroque- style library, the
wood-panelled refectory, the frescoed chapter room and the monks'
reference library.

Roxanne's lecture topic is How many roads must a library walk down? The
lecture will cover the "roads" we have pursued to create access, the
messages which can and could be sent through signposts along the way,
some insights into analysis of user behaviour on the Parliament of
Australia's website and comments on the benefits of moving from
information martyrs to natives.

Inspired by the achievement of Cadel Evans, Kerry's topic is Preserving
the information commons: libraries, Google and monks.

For only $77, or $33 for a student, you will visit special areas of the
monastery, hear stimulating lectures, network with colleagues from
across the library spectrum, enjoy morning tea and buffet lunch, and
have free entry to the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery. We need
registration and pre-payment by September 2. See below for a
registration form.

Registration is at 10 a.m. followed by the lectures. The tour of the
monastery is after lunch with afternoon tea at 3 p.m.

Please RSVP by email to library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au
<mailto:library at newnorcia.wa.edu.au> or by post to Sue Johnson, New
Norcia Library, New Norcia, WA 6509. Receipts and ALIA-approved P.D.
certificates will be provided on the day of the lecture. Tax invoices
will be provided on request. For further details, contact me by email,
or by phone me Wednesdays to Fridays on 9654 8060.
