Expression of Interest - Study Tour to Singapore

Following the recent "Necessity is the mother of (re)invention: the
future for libraries" Library Seminar, State Library are investigating
whether there is sufficient interest for a study tour to Singapore.

Dr. Varaprasad's presentation "Issues and Challenges facing public
libraries" generated considerable interest throughout the library
community. During subsequent discussions, Dr. Varaprasad has indicated
that a tour to Singapore would be very welcome. State Library will
arrange a study tour to Singapore if there is sufficient interest.

We anticipate that the tour would occur between July - October 2010, and
would be of 3 - 4 days duration. Costs will be kept to a minimum; we
anticipate these to be approx $1,600 (this figure allows for airfare &
accommodation expenses of $800 each). Final costs will be determined
dependant on final arrangements.

The tour may include the following:

* a cross section of public libraries - e.g. youth, mobile service,
performing arts library, services to children, services to 'hard to
reach';

* a look at their outreach programs such as multi cultural story
time, reading programmes, Quest, their Better Beginnings equivalent;

*    their service offerings such as to business, search training;

* behind the scenes - collection processing, RFID, other
technologies, staff training programs;

* National Library - digitisation, service delivery, storage etc; and

* a visit to an academic library if sufficient time and interest

The final details would be determined once the interest level for the
Study Tour has been determined.

Please contact Janet Deegan janet.deegan at slwa.wa.gov.au or 9427 3162 if
you would like to register your interest in attending the study tour. A
response by Monday 31 May would be appreciated.
