Subject: [WAIN] Minter Ellison Lawyers - Donation to SLWA
A recent clean up of the deeds room at Minter Ellison Lawyers unearthed
a copy of a 1930's handwritten diary written by the Rev. John Ramsden
Wollaston on his journey from England to Western Australia in 1840 -
1841. The journal, John Ramsden Wollaston's Journal of his voyage from
Gravesend to the Swan River 1840-1 was handed over to the State Library
at a recent morning tea. CEO & State Librarian Margaret Allen accepted
the donation from John Poulsen, Managing Partner (Perth Office), Minter
Ellison Lawyers.
Wollaston's diary tells of daily life aboard the ship "Henry" (Captain
Todd), and contains observations of birds, fish, the weather and
countries visited on the way to Western Australia. The handwritten copy
donated by Minter Ellison was made by Canon Alfred Burton, a well known
clergy man and prominent theological historian in WA.
Rev. Wollaston was 50 when he arrived in Fremantle in April 1941. He
arrived with the intention of becoming the Chaplain at Australind, but
was then told that there was no money to build a church. In May 1842
Wollaston and his sons built St Mark's Church in Picton. This church is
the second oldest church in WA. Wollaston was transferred to the parish
of St John's, Albany in 1848, and was appointed Archdeacon of Western
Australia early in 1849. Over the next seven years Wollaston covered
many hundreds of miles on horseback throughout the settled areas of the
colony. He died in 1856.
This donation is one of a number of major archival collections donated
to the State Library over recent months. These have included materials
from the Australian Land & Cattle Company, the Hole in the Wall Theatre
Company, the de Burgh & Lefroy families and the Great Southern Roller
Flour Mills.
We would like to encourage anyone who may have materials suitable for
our collection to consider donating them to the State Library. Please
