Proposed Changes to the Library Board of Western Australia Act 1951

Public Consultation Meeting 

Tuesday 3 July 2007

The Library Board of Western Australia Act was enacted in 1951 to
establish a free public library system in Western Australia.  It
established the Library Board of Western Australia as a statutory body
with the first public library opening in York in 1952.  There are now
239 registered public libraries throughout the State and the Library
Board is also responsible for the management of the State Library.

 

While the Act has served well it requires a refresh to reflect the
current environment under which the Library Board, the State Library of
WA, and Local Government operate for the provision of library services.
Proposed changes to the Act fall into three broad areas:

*	Library Board structure and governance
*	Library Board relationship with local government and public
libraries, and 
*	Legal deposit.

You, and any other interested party, are invited to participate in a
meeting to discuss the proposed changes.  Following a briefing, the
session will be open for people to raise any questions or discuss
aspects of the proposed changes. 

 

There are currently consultation papers (in particular Paper 4) on our

understand the proposed changes and should be read prior to the
workshop.  If you are unable to attend but would like to make comment
