The Facilitators Delwyn Goodrick PhD & Emma Sampson MAPS
Internationally acclaimed evaluator Delwyn Goodrick undertakes program evaluation and social research with a wide range of government and private sector clients. She is also an inspirational educator and trainer, having conducted a range of specialist workshops in research and program evaluation in Australia, Singapore, the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand. She is an amazing presenter who will have participants energized and prepared to build their own evidence base from a range of practice contexts. Emma Sampson is an active member of the APS College of Community Psychologists and has worked in research, policy, evaluation and community development. Advocacy has been core in all these roles, and while it has taken different forms in different contexts, it has been fundamental to the broader goal of community and social change.

The Workshop
Advocacy is a key role for practitioners and organisations seeking to embed social justice goals in their practice and in program evaluation. This workshop explores the dimensions of advocacy, and the opportunities and challenges in using research and evaluation as a basis for advocacy. Two key questions will be addressed: Does advocacy weaken the credibility of an evaluation? How can an explicit values base support good evaluation? Emma and Delwyn will draw on learnings from an advocacy research project they have been working on in Victoria, and from the literature. The workshop will provide an opportunity for discussion of the benefits and risks of advocacy evaluation.
