This message (and attached flyer) speaks for itself and the training is highly recommended by participants in other states, most recently SA post-Adelaide fires.

Hi Heather,
Here’s an email that I sent out last week to the WA Disaster Response Network members. Of course, they are not the only people in WA who might be interested in the workshops, so it would be great if you could forward this information to people in the Community College who might also be interested. The Red Cross said that the people in both these fire affected communities are very keen to have a support group. It’s a terrific opportunity.
Kind regards
Susie

A quarterly update of the APS Disaster Response Network (DRN)

Disaster support group training in Western Australia, 29th and 30th June 2015

  * Disaster support group training Western Australia 29th, 30th June

Welcome

Hello to all,
The APS has been working with the Australian Red Cross to support the recovery of people affected by bushfires in Western Australia. One of our projects is to offer support groups to people living in the fire affected communities near Perth and near Busselton. We would love you to come along if you were available and interested in being trained as a volunteer to run support groups. Similar workshops have been run in South Australia, NSW and Victoria following bushfires in those regions over the past few years. We are very pleased to now be able to offer some training in WA.
Regards,

Australian Red Cross and the APS are partnering to run a disaster support group workshop for mental health professionals with experience in running groups, who also have experience in disaster recovery or other areas of traumatic stress or grief. Following the workshop, the Red Cross is planning to offer support groups to communities in the fire-affected regions near Busselton and Perth, but also will consider doing so for any future disasters.
After the workshop we may ask you to volunteer time to facilitate monthly support groups of 1 1/2 to 2 hours as part of Red Cross Psychosocial Recovery programs. Groups might involve travel to rural communities and may need to be in the evening, and could last for more than a year.
There will be two workshops run in WA.
BUSSELTON
Monday 29th June, 1pm to 5pm.
Community Resource Centre on the corner of Camilleri Street and Harris Road, Busselton.
 PERTH
Tuesday 30th June, 1pm to 5pm.
Perth Red Cross office, 110 Goderich St, East Perth
The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Susie Burke FAPS, the APS senior psychologist for Disaster Response. Susie has been training mental health professionals in post-disaster recovery and mental health since the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, and over the last 2 years has been coordinating the APS/Red Cross disaster support group workshops.
Since the disaster support groups are an intervention targeted at psychological recovery, it is important that the Group Facilitators are able to discuss and answer questions about mental health issues in a credible and authoritative manner.
Essential: A post-graduate qualification in a mental health area; A minimum of 3 years clinical experience in mental health and/or counselling; Experience in running groups
Desirable: Experience in disaster recovery or other areas of traumatic stress.
If you think you would be suitable and can commit to conducting support groups following a disaster, please email us at drn at psychology.org.au<mailto:drn at psychology.org.au> by Tuesday June 23rd including an up-to-date CV. Please write 'support group training' in the subject line.
