Further to my previous alert about this webinar series...

A number of you who work in the human services field will be interested in registering for this very timely professional development opportunity - Webinar series: Refugees & Asylum Seekers: Experiences, issues and interventions. The webinar series with the complete program is on the APS Events page.To register for the event please follow the link: https://events.psychology.org.au/ei/getdemo.ei?id=1601&s=_3W00Q5TI4<http://email.psychology.org.au/wf/click?upn=8Dq1LOZYCWFSUaMDBuQEVZ8lGW5exin3ZMO5ITa7LVU-2BG-2FtIvfq8tLzqq7gfubipyT4-2FWopVY2zKCzYKMyKrQOM-2FSnRTl8aVfSBLr1QHTkw-3D_qhAE8G-2BxQ9rc58ERKtC04aDOYOSJPptZ99S0SlShVBvh7taEa6jvHZmNwU-2BsdoWzmqZuIZTZPMgORaQiuSZX2-2FdQFdwaDdIxLbRWumUMd-2BOLTxTlX119ROFXm5Wy0Axhlfdzfw9Cr2FQe4BolIM05i0ioVeAFPcJ1Lb6-2BSAEQdUWMObEJwr6prWkoSKE6bMYoIneDPYFvj7ipbTMQkavEQ-3D-3D>
Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We were puzzled- after so much expression of interest and enthusiasm for the upcoming webinar series: Refugees and Asylum Seekers: Experiences, Issues and Interventions, that the number of registrations were sadly, pretty low. We really want this webinar series to happen, because we believe it is vital to therapists, activists and Australian Citizens.

So, our National Committee has given this matter urgent consideration, and we are pleased to announce that the upcoming Webinar Series: Refugees and Asylum Seekers: Experiences, Issues and Interventions is now being offered at a GREATLY reduced rate. (Note to those who have already registered: you will receive a refund of the difference soon.)

The [volunteer] National Committee of the Refugee Issues and Psychology Interest Group are strongly committed to ensuring this webinar series is viewed by as many people as possible. We would love to be able to offer it for free. However, even though the presenters are generously donating their time, and the organizing committee do this pro-bono, we do have costs to cover in terms of the webinar platform.

We want as many people who have an interest in this issue, professional or personal, to be able to attend this webinar series. As Assoc Professor Amanda Gordon wrote:

"The plight of people seeking asylum in the lucky country seems to be worse in 2015 than it was in the dreadful days prior to the Palmer and Comrie Reports, which sparked real changes in our understanding of the impact of immigration detention on the mental health and wellbeing of detainees. Now, we know so much – and yet the evidence is ignored in Government policy.

Psychologists and other mental health and health professionals are once again having to determine the ethics of working to support asylum seekers while they are in a system that is causing harm. We are having to work in systems in which Politics impacts our interventions, and where helplessness is learned, hopelessness reigns supreme.

The National APS Refugee Issues and Psychology Interest Group is responding to these conditions in the best way we can – by giving all those who have an interest in the area an opportunity to learn from the evidence, to grapple with the big issues and develop skills specific to working in the area.

So, if you were considering registering for the event/s but didn’t because of the cost, here are the NEW REGISTRATION FEES:

Per webinar:

$45 (APS member)

$55 (non-APS member)

Student rate per webinar:

$30 (APS student member)

$35 (non-APS student member)

Group rate per webinar [where a group = 2 or more people watching the webinar):

$80 (APS members)

$100 (non-APS member)

If you register, this webinar series offers you:

· Up-to-date information from experts in their field regarding:

o the experiences of people seeking asylum and refugees

o the issues they face pre and post seeking asylum

o as well as the issues we face as therapists, advocates and as citizens of Australia as we either work with this client group OR try to make sense of Australia’s response to the fellow human beings who either reach our shores or try to reach our shores

o and therapeutic interventions that may help those seeking Australia’s protection.

· The option to watch the webinar/s at a time convenient to you, anytime for three months after the webinar has aired. So if you can’t make it on the night, it’s not a problem :). As long as you register, you can take your time to watch it at your leisure.

· ‘Active’ CPD for those who need it (articles will be distributed prior to the event as pre-reading)

· Knowledge that will be readily translatable into every day practice.

So, what else do you need to know?:

1. We no longer have a ‘whole series’ rate

2. Because of these ‘last minute’ changes, and the ‘behind the scenes logistics’, the date for the first webinar has been changed to Tuesday, 24 February (6.00-8.00pm EADT). All other advertised dates and times remain the same. An up to date flyer is available on the APS Events webpage.

3. The cut off for registration for each webinar is midnight Sunday prior to the webinar. (The APS Events page will update this.)

4. Remember, you can register AND not attend on the day of the webinar. You can watch it for up to 3 months after the actual airing of the webinar.

We really hope you will support this Webinar Series, and we hope you find it a useful and valuable learning opportunity.
