Subject: SAVE DATES IN YOUR DIARIES - UC San Diego Professor of Anthropology Janis Jenkins to visit Monash
Dear friends and colleagues

The Health and Illness Experiences Research Program, School of Political and Social Inquiry (PSI) at Monash, in collaboration with Nexus - Monash Social Science, Humanities and Medicine Network, will be hosting Dr Janis Jenkins, Professor of Anthropology and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, during her visit here in August 2013. This academic visit is supported by the Art's Faculty Distinguish Visiting Scholar Scheme.

Please save the dates for public lectures below in your diary and please distribute this information among your networks. Further information will be provided closer to the time of presentations.
  1. 'Creating Tangible Lives: Culture, Power, and Mental Illness'
Tuesday 20th August, 11am-1pm (venue TBC)
In this presentation Prof Jenkins will explore the convergence of anthropology and psychiatry and more broadly, the intersections of culture and psychopathology with reference to her research activity projects that address the central role of culture in experiences both extraordinary and ordinary among persons living with mental illness, and as requisite to any deep understanding of culture.
  2. 'Culture, Biopower, and Mental Health: Science, Magic, and Religion in an Era of Pharmaceuticals'
Thursday 22nd August, 2-4pm, Monash Conference Centre, Level 7, 30 Collins Street
Prof Jenkis' lecture will draw on ethnographic materials from a study of ninety persons taking antipsychotic medications to explore the experience and meaning of taking these medications. In so doing, she will argue that the overwhelming emphasis on biologically-based neuroscience in US research on mental health and illness is misplaced, and that researching culture and mental health is as crucial as it is complex for nearly every aspect of mental illness from etiology to outcome.

Kind regards

Renata
