Dear Colleague

Call for papers now extended until 5 April 2013 - Register your abstract now

On behalf of the School of Humanities at Flinders University, we are pleased to announce the following

conference:

2nd International Conference on Ageing in a Foreign Land

To be held at the Bedford Park campus of Flinders University, located in Adelaide, South Australia, on 27-30 June 2013.

The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing will attend, address the conference and will participate in a Q and A session.

The conference is an initiative of the Flinders University Modern Greek Section. It is hosted by the LOGOS Australian Centre for Hellenic Language and Culture, Flinders Institute for Research in the Humanities and the School of Humanities at Flinders University with the generous support of The Foundation for Hellenic Studies. We are also pleased to announce that the conference will be organized in collaboration with the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre at the University of Adelaide and is supported by the Australian Association of Gerontology.

The inter-disciplinary conference will explore the theme of ageing, enabling discussion on the reality of ageing within the migrant diaspora. Ageing in a Foreign Land will address the needs of the migrant diaspora with regard to ageing and health, service provision, language and cultural identity, issues of Greek and other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities in Australia and overseas. We welcome attendance and participation from academics, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and aged care providers.

A defined program will be dedicated to presentations on Ageing that will address issues from a number of historical, social and contemporary perspectives.

We are particularly (but not exclusively) seeking papers and posters on:

Positive ageing and culturally appropriate care

Families, ageing migrants and care in the community

• Particular emphasis will be given to the range of strategies currently operating that aim to promote culturally appropriate care and provide solutions for Australian migrant communities and other Diasporas.
• Housing and Aged Care options. Healthy ageing is often linked with an older person being able to remain in their own home as they age. However this may impact on their safety, health and well-being, feelings of loneliness and access to services and transport. Papers addressing these issues are invited as well as discussion on the formulation of policies to enable people to grow old at home.

• In order to better understand the needs of the ageing generation, it is beneficial to consult communities and families. To analyse and deeply understand ageing we need to adopt a more holistic approach. This is even more important for the migrant communities in which families and community organisations are playing a crucial role in the daily lives of the elderly. In some cases the impact on migrant families is creating various pressures on traditional family structures, while in other cases intergenerational collaboration is providing an excellent framework for aged people to age in a more supportive manner.

Ageing at 45?

Interdisciplinary perspectives on migrant ageing

• Emphasis will be given to areas of work and the ageing labour force from the diaspora perspective. Research shows that working migrants encounter cultural and linguistic challenges when attempting to re-engage in the workforce after an injury or other health-related issues.

• The conference is seeking to promote interdisciplinary approaches, in particular in the area of migrant Diasporas. We believe that it is necessary for researchers from various fields to collaborate in order to understand ageing more fully and effectively.

Access to services for ageing migrants

Experiences of ageing among the Hellenic Diaspora

• The engagement of local government councils will be given particular emphasis, whether on a national scale or globally. Delegates are invited to discuss and debate approaches and programs that address the needs of Australia’s ageing migrant population and the challenges they are facing. The conference welcomes suggestions for more effective services and solutions for the ageing migrant population in Australia and globally in order to promote positive ageing.

• The conference will include papers and workshops on the Hellenic diaspora in Australia and across the globe. Comparative case studies regarding the Greek ageing diaspora and other Diasporas are also welcome.

Community Oriented Cultural Programs or Activities

 • Australia is a country of communities and it is important for communities from various backgrounds to exchange creative ideas about positive ageing. We are interested to hear about cultural programs or activities that engage positively in the community and can be easily transferable to other communities.
