Subject: Prosperity Without Growth - Public Forum (11/06/10)

Good afternoon,

Global warming, species extinction, pollution, waste. Problems caused by the over-use of material resources are reaching a critical point planet-wide. Yet our economies remain addicted to economic growth. Can we get off the treadmill in time?

On Friday the 11th of June at 5:30pm, the Centre for Public Policy and the Melbourne Sustainable Societies Institute will together be hosting a public evening forum on the topic of Prosperity Without Growth.

The keynote speaker at this event will be Tim Jackson, Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey and Director of the Research Group on Lifestyles, Values and Environment (RESOLVE).

Since 2004, Tim has been Economics Commissioner on the UK Sustainable Development Commission and is the author of their controversial and ground-breaking SDC report Prosperity Without Growth the transition to a sustainable economy (now updated and expanded in the book Prosperity Without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet).

The SDC report may be found at: http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/file_download.php?target=/publications/downloads/prosperity_without_growth_report.pdf

Tim Jackson is in Melbourne as the guest of the Wheeler Centre for the 2010 Alfred Deakin Innovation Lectures.

On Friday, Tim will be joined by Professor Robyn Eckersley, Professor Boris Frankel and Dr Peter Christoff. The event will be held in the Public Policy Lecture Theatre, 2nd Floor, 234 Queensberry Street, Carlton. There is no cost involved and no need to RSVP. The event will conclude at 7pm.

I hope to see you there!

Warmest regards,

Dr Lauren Rosewarne
