Here we were worrying about the future of community psychology in Australia, and the Gillard government is busy out-Howarding Abbott by proposing to set up a detention centre in one of the poorest countries in the world - just a bit closer to home than Nauru.

I am speechless (for once).

Emergency Action for Refugee rights:
Drop the dog-whistle
No return to Howard's Pacific Solution

8:45am Treasury Place - Cnr Spring Street, Treasury Place.
TOMORROW: Wednesday, 7 July

In a nationally televised speech to the Lowy Insitute, today, Julia Gillard has announced her intention to return to Howard style policies on refugees.

A new detention centre will be built on East Timor and asylum seekers who come to Australia by boat will be removed there.

It is an outrageous return to the infamous Pacific Solution of John Howard and Phillip Ruddock.

East Timor is ranked 162 on the UN Human development index and is one of the poorest countries in the world, they have their own problems and should not have Australia's responsibilities to care for refugees dumped on them.

It is appalling and must stop.

Solidarity,

Jake Wishart
