SPECIAL GUEST PRESENTATION

Praxising what we 'teach'

Professor David Fryer, Charles Sturt University

How should community critical psychology be 'taught'? Clearly community critical psychology should be community critical psychological in process as well as content, but in my experience it is easier to state that requirement in theory than to meet it in practice. In this short, informal talk I will describe some collaborative work with community activists in which we attempted to engage simultaneously in both community critical psychology 'teaching' and intervention, i.e. to engage in a process which is at one and the same time critical pedagogy and progressive praxis.

David is currently Professor of Community Critical Psychology at Charles Sturt University, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Stirling University, Scotland, 2009 Visiting Professor at the University of Puerto Rico and President of the European Community Psychology Association (2009-2011). David has confused students of community psychology, critical psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology and critical methodology for decades, and has supervised Ph.D. research on unemployment, disability, school exclusion, artivism and sexual violence. David finds he understands less and less the more he thinks, has learned most of the little of value he still 'knows' about community critical psychology from community activists, and increasingly believes most important function for teachers is to 'unteach'.
