Women's experiences of changes to the Family Law Act

The Women and Psychology Interest Group brings women together as
practitioners, consumers, academics and students of all ages and a range
of backgrounds.

       

       For our Family Law Session, Allyson Foster from the Women's Legal
Service will present a brief overview of the recent changes to the
Family Law Act.  She will also discuss some of the impacts these changes
are having on women who are accessing the Women's Legal Service. There
will be time allocated for questions and a lively discussion is
anticipated (during which supper will be provided). 

       Fiona Combe will then outline some of the difficulties women who
have left abusive relationships may encounter with the mediation
process. She will also relay some of the concerns that women have
expressed during their calls to the Council of Single Mothers and their
Children.

       Carmel O'Brien will speak about some of the issues for
psychologists assessing women and children where violence has occurred,
and also outline some difficulties women experience when traversing the
Family Court process.  Carmel manages a suite of Women's Support
Programs at a large community agency.
