"Australia and the Island Prison: Christmas Island Immigration Detention
Centre as State of Exception" - presented by Jude McCullough

Head of Criminology at Monash University. A free lunchtime talk.

Thursday 14 June, 1.00-2.00pm in the Dept of Criminology Staff
Common Room

(School of Political Science, Criminology and Sociology,
University of Melbourne)

Level 4, 234 Queensberry Street, Carlton.

The island has often been used as a metaphor to describe prison.
In the past literal islands were frequently used to isolate, exclude and
to punish ... The island continent of Australia was originally
established as a penal colony and employed its islands as locations of
secondary punishment for recalcitrant convicts and to isolate and punish
Indigenous people. The presentation will examine the contemporary
spatial politics of exclusion and isolation in Island detention centres
and the various ways these physical islands relate to the 'state of
exception' as articulated in the work of political philosopher Georgio
Agamben ... focusing particularly on the high-tech detention centre
currently under construction on Australia's remote Christmas Island.
