<span style="font-size:12.0pt; line-height:115%; font-family:"Helvetica",sans-serif; color:#595959">Norman Tindale’s legacy of photographs and associated medical and genealogical documentation of Aboriginal people from many parts of Australia, feature prominently
within native title debates. In addition, Tindale’s photographs are significant for people undertaking family history research. Transforming Tindale, an exhibition Mr. Aird curated in 2012, explored photographs taken in 1938 during a scientific expedition
in Queensland led by Norman Tindale. All the people photographed on this expedition were incarcerated in government settlements, and in one sense they were ‘victims’, in that they did not have the power to object to having these images taken, or control over
the way they were represented. But equally, when looking at many of these photographs, you can see people’s strength and confidence. Michael Aird will discuss a range of issues that this exhibition highlighted, including those relating to anthropologists studying
Aboriginal people and treating them as scientific objects, while also looking at the importance of Aboriginal people now being able to gain access to photographs and documents that relate to their family histories held by archives, museum and libraries.</span></p>

heritage since 1985 maintaining an interest in documenting aspects of urban Aboriginal history and culture. He has curated over 30 exhibitions and has been involved in numerous projects in the area of art, history and research. In 1996 he established Keeaira
