Public Domain Day a Big Deal for Australia
To mark Public Domain Day 2026 – which took place on 1 January – ALIA’s Director, Policy Education Research and Training, Jessica Coates has written a piece on why this is a major moment for Australia, marking the end of a 20-year pause in published works entering the public domain. Associate Professor Jane Garner is leading a new research project on workplace violence and aggression in public and academic libraries, conducted on behalf of ALIA-APLA and CAUL. Surveys are being delivered to University Librarians, public library CEOs, managers and customer-facing staff across Australian public and university libraries to help build a clearer picture of current experiences and inform safer, more supportive workplace practices.

What’s Entering the Public Domain at the National Library of Australia
Public Domain Day 2026 marks a significant moment for the National Library of Australia, with a wide range of works from its collections now free to use, share and reuse. Newly public-domain material includes unpublished papers by Australians who died in 1955 – such as Max Meldrum and William Hardy Wilson – alongside anonymous works from 1955 and federal government publications from 1975, reopening access to a rich slice of Australia’s cultural and creative history.

State Library Awards Better Beginnings Community Grants
The State Library of Western Australia has announced 15 recipients sharing $208,000 through Round 5 of the Better Beginnings Community Grants, supporting early reading and literacy programs across metropolitan and regional WA in 2026. Since 2021, the program has invested more than $1 million in community-led initiatives, backing projects that strengthen language development, cultural connection and family engagement to give children the best possible start in life.

Submissions Open for the 2026 EBSCO Solar Grant
EBSCO is offering $300,000 in grant funding to support libraries implementing solar energy projects to help reduce electricity costs and advance sustainability initiatives. The EBSCO Solar Grant is open to EBSCO customers, including libraries subscribing to ANZ Reference Centre, Fiero Code or Flipster.
Applications close on 30 April 2026 and recipients announced in June 2026.
