Hi students

There’s an opportunity for you to experience listing an archives with me over the next few weeks.

The archives of a Perth based experimental film academic have recently been moved to an office at UWA. The collection is internationally significant to the small but enthusiastic community of experimental film scholars.

At the moment the collection is in cartons with no list. The cartons are labelled which gives some idea of their contents but the task remains to understand what’s there and to list it.

Creating a box list or item list is step one in organising an archival collection.
Along the way, we will be doing things like identifying series. We will be thinking about preservation – we will be noting formats and condition. We will also be thinking about significance – are the materials unique? Who is going to be most interested in them and what do they need to know about them?

Once the list has been produced, the different stakeholders associated with the collection will make decisions about where it should go and what kind of access is appropriate. We may go the next step and gather more detailed item level information.

There’s no budget for this project and it’s not an official Curtin University-endorsed opportunity so you would be getting involved as a volunteer. It’s important to note there’s no insurance or OHS coverage for the project.

The opportunity to get to work on this collection has come up quickly and work has already started. If you’d like to get involved, there are spots for 3 students, contact me at louise.curham at curtin.edu.au<mailto:louise.curham at curtin.edu.au> as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday 5 Feb.
I am going in to UWA to work on it just a couple of work hours a week. I’ll also be doing some work on it after hours and on weekends.

Perth based students can physically join me at UWA.

Online students can get involved in listing items from photographs once we get into the boxes. You’d need to commit to a timeframe to make your contribution but you can do that work at a time that suits you.

Warm regards, Louise
