SUMMER 2024/2025 PRACTICUM PLACEMENT APPLICATIONS DUE BY 16 SEPTEMBER 2024
Dear Libraries, Archives, Records and Information Science (LARIS) students

This is an important email for both Curtin students and Open Universities Australia (OUA) students who are enrolled in 2024 units with a practicum placement requirement. It is also important if you are transitioning from pre-2023 courses.

Applications for the Summer 2024/2025 practicum placements are due by Monday 16 September 2024. Instructions on the application process are provided below, please read to the end of this email so you are fully informed. If you have already completed the placement requirements for your course, you can ignore this email. If you have already submitted your application (or applications), thank you, you can ignore this email. If you are not sure whether you need to apply at this time, please read on, as this is explained below. Please note that the call for 2025 placements, that is, placements for late May 2025 onwards, will circulate at the commencement of Special Study Period 1/Study Period 1, 2025.

Do you need to apply now?
*       Are you studying the Graduate Diploma in Information and Library Science and enrolled in, or intending on enrolling in INFO5009 INF520/INFO5044 Research and Evaluation SSP4/SP4? YES/NO
*       Are you studying the Graduate Diploma in Archives and Records and enrolled in INFO5003 INF540/INFO5046 Digital Preservation SSP3/SP3? YES/NO
*       Are you studying the Master of Information Science (Extended) or Master of Information Science (18 months) and enrolled in INFO5003 INF540/INFO5046 Digital Preservation SSP3/SP3 and/or INFO5009 INF520/INFO5044 Research and Evaluation SSP4/SP4? YES/NO
*       Are you studying the Master of Information Science (Extended) and planning on enrolling in COMS6002 COM600/COMS6006 Masters Professional Experience in S1 or SP1 2025? YES/NO
*       Are you intending on course completion this year and have yet to apply for, or complete the practicum requirement/s?  YES/NO
*       Are you a pre-2023 student (previous courses) without any of the aforementioned units on your study plan and have yet to apply for, or complete the practicum requirements attached to previous placement units or nominally attached to other units? YES/NO
*       If you answered YES to any of the questions above then you are required to apply for and undertake a three-week/15 day practicum, possibly two, if enrolled in the Master of Information Science programs. If in the Master of Information Science (Extended), possibly two placements and the optional internship.
*
Please note that units with placements attached, Research and Evaluation and Digital Preservation have a pre-requisite of 75 credits completed; the internship unit Masters Professional Experience has a pre-requisite of Research and Evaluation. Placements can be completed before, during or one study period after a unit with a practicum placement requirement, if pre-requisite requirements are met.

Please note that special study periods [SSPs] relate to Curtin students and study periods [SPs] to Open Universities Australia (OUA) students. SSPs and SPs are aligned:
SSP3/SP3 Monday 26 August 2024 to Sunday 24 November 2024
SSP4/SP4 Monday 25 November 2024 to Sunday 23 February 2025
SSP1/SP1+ dates TBC

If you are not reading this in Blackboard, please go to your Blackboard home page>Organisations>Libraries, Archives, Records and Information Science (LARIS) Practicum Documents>Practicum Documents. If you can't access Libraries, Archives, Records and Information Science (LARIS) Practicum Documents in Blackboard email the Practicum Program Coordinator requesting access.
Once in Blackboard LARIS Practicum Documents: Please read the Practicum Manual very carefully as it provides detailed instructions on the application and placement process. It also includes information on applying for equivalency for the placement, should you have industry experience.

ALL completed application documents must be emailed as attachments to MCASIPrac at Curtin.edu.au<mailto:MCASIPrac at Curtin.edu.au> from your Curtin email address by the deadline: Monday 16 September 2024.
