Hi Ellie:
Here’s the expanded brief.
A casual employment opportunity exists for an experienced Curtin LARIS postgraduate student to audit and catalogue a private academic collection of 2,000+ atomic age material culture items at a Hilton home studio owned by Curtin Adjunct Professor Mick Broderick. This role might work well as a summer break job.
"Atomicalia” examples for background:
- 2020 academic chapter on one aspect of the atomicalia<https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2xuskofzvtefvxhfb2fpj/Atomicalia_2020.pdf?rlkey=l10b8g4fqh770hvng8besrmwj&dl=0> collection
- links to representative videos from ABC-TV 2006<https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2gbhh7w4hhruwqvik41ie/Collectors_Atomicalia_2006.mov?rlkey=cny1fy6x602snjlp62ec93pzb&dl=0> and Hiroshima exhibition 2009<https://vimeo.com/73658596>
Tasks will be:
- consolidate existing spread sheets of item/object data into a master database and daily back-up to dropbox/hard drive
- while cataloguing, carefully handle and record 3D material culture objects (eg. toys, games, apparel, foodstuffs, historical memorabilia) and 2D items (eg. papers, magazines, advertisements, movie lobby cards and posters)
- photograph some of the collection
- ongoing liaison with the owner concerning the annotations for items/objects
- move item/object container boxes
- employee to use their own laptop on site with appropriate, current software (eg. Word, Excel). Owner to provide back-up hard drive. All photography will be on the employee’s smart phone and transferred/backed-up daily
Estimated duration is up to 500hrs, split into 4 hour blocs per day, eg. 9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm, as either mornings or afternoons, not both. Work days can be flexible by agreement.
Candidates should have demonstrably competent keyboard skills and speed for data entry across software, and excellent spoken and written English.
Intellectual property remains with the owner of the collection, ie. all data entered, photography and annotations undertaken.
Gross salary is $30.00 per hour paid weekly by amount of hours worked. For example 5 x 4hr session = $600/week.
A paid trial period will be in effect of up to 2 weeks from commencement.
To apply, by 5pm, 1 November 2024:
1. provide a one-page cover letter describing your relevant experience and interests
2. CV of no more than 4 pages
3. contact details (phone and email) for two referees familiar with your academic standard, and ideally, your work experience
4. Email: profmjsb at gmail.com<mailto:profmjsb at gmail.com>
Note: Prof. Broderick will be travelling mid-to-late October and not accessing emails until 30 October.
