Wednesday Open Talks - 8th March 2023 - Updates

Hello Again,

I got some very worthwhile feedback from my last email asking if the Open Talks can be made available online and recorded for people who can't attend. Thank you everyone who asked. This has now been done.

This is the link to the iLecture:

It will be streamed to those of you who can't join us in person between 12noon and 1.30 tomorrow afternoon (Australian Western Standard Time). It will be also recorded, and I will distribute a link to the recording once we are all done.

For those of you who can attend in person I will look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at 12 in the Norman Duffy Lecture Theatre (210.102:LT).

All the best,

Mike

Hello Everyone,

My name is Mike Kent and I am one of the discipline leads the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. Technically my area is the Curtin iSchool but a better description is it is the media and information disciplines in the school. This year we will be hosting a series of Open Talks during semester during the common free time on Wednesday lunchtimes (12-1.30pm) in the Norman Duffy Lecture Theatre (210.102:LT).

These Open Talks are an opportunity to introduce cutting edge research and topics of debate by some of our leading academics here at Curtin in the school. This is the research that is leading our learning and teaching programs but sometimes takes a while to filter through. I hope you will join us for some or all of these.

Next week we will kick these off on the 8th March with a panel discussion on Generative AI, notably ChatGTP and its like. I will be moderating a panel of our expert researchers in this area, where we will discuss what is going on with AI at the moment, what are the implications and where are we heading. These programs create images, and all kinds of written work from reports to poetry, to university essays. What does this mean for us looking forward as the people who might normally do this stuff instead of machines.

Please come and join us on Wednesday over your lunch break - it should be a very interesting conversation. There will be three members of the panel, moderated by me.

Tama Leaver is a Professor of Internet Studies, teaching into the Digital and Social Media major at Curtin. He is the President of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR), a regular media commentator, and a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child.

Dr Kayt Davies is a lecturer in the Journalism program, and has been researching the impact of recent changes in generative AI - you might have seen her work on this in The West Australian recently. Dr Davies has also been leading the Curtin University response to the challenges and opportunities in learning and teaching and your graduate outcomes presented by AI

Associate Professor Nicole Slatter is the Dean of Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Humanities and teaches, when she can, in our Fine Art discipline. A/Prof Slatter not only brings her knowledge on generative AI and art, but also a perspective on how the university and our faculty is viewing these changes in technology

Mike Kent - I am also a Professor of Internet Studies, where my focus is on disability and media technology. Spoilers for this talk - I think these technologies and transformative and exciting and mastering how we deploy them is going to be something that defines the next five years. It might not be as transformative as the world wide web, but might be as transformative as the digitisation of music or the rise of streaming platforms. I look forward to our panel putting me in my place and giving this some better perspective. I hope you can join us on Wednesday.

All the best,

Mike
