Hello LARIS students

The Wednesday talks are back on and the first should be of interest to you all as COKI does some great work with large datasets and open knowledge/open access. See the information below.

Best wishes

Wednesday Open Talks – 9th of August 2023

Hello Everyone,

This year we are hosting a series of Open Talks during semester during the common free time on Wednesday lunchtimes (12-1.30pm) both in person at in the Norman Duffy Lecture Theatre (210.102:LT) and Online. the next of these is scheduled for this Wednesday the 9th of August.

These Open Talks are an opportunity to introduce cutting edge research and topics of debate by some of our leading academics here at Curtin in the school for all our students, as well as staff.
This is the research that is leading our learning and teaching programs but sometimes takes a while to filter through. I hope you will join us for some or all of these.
The lecture will be steamed and recorded for those of you who are not on our Bentley Campus. You can find the link here: https://echo360.net.au/section/dabb4f75-467d-4b70-9bcc-53b6c4c470ad/public

This week’s talk will be:

Critical Humanities Meets Big Data: The Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative

The Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative<https://openknowledge.community/> is a project that was born of frustration. We wanted to help senior leaders in our university to look beyond league tables and citation counts as indicators of the ‘quality’ and ‘value’ of research, and to start new conversations about why openness and diversity matter.

By combining critical humanities perspectives with cloud based computing and data science expertise, we have been able to engage with publicly available data relating to global research communication at scale. As we have discovered, community investments in open metadata infrastructures are creating a phase-change in what we can see, as well as the questions we can ask, using open data.

In this talk we will introduce the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative: a Humanities-led project that is engaging with the possibilities of both big and small data about the communities that make and use research. We will take you through some of our projects; the tools that we are using; and the questions we are asking.

Lucy Montgomery (@LucyMontgomery_<https://twitter.com/LucyMontgomery_>)

Lucy Montgomery is Professor of Knowledge Innovation at Curtin University, where she leads the Innovation in Knowledge Communication research program at the Centre for Culture and Technology<https://ccat.curtin.edu.au/>. Montgomery’s current projects include the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative<https://openknowledge.community/>, a major strategic research initiative that is bringing together publicly available data about the openness of global research<https://open.coki.ac/> landscapes and lowering barriers to its use; as well as the Mellon Foundation funded Book Analytics Dashboard Project<https://openknowledge.community/projects/bad-project/> (2022-2025), which is creating a sustainable OA book focussed analytics service that supports diversity in the voices, perspectives, geographies, topics and languages made visible through OA books.

Chun-Kai (Karl) Huang (@CK_Karl_Huang)

Karl Huang is a Research Fellow attached to the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative<https://openknowledge.community/> project, where he is leading a program of critical research exploring openness and diversity in global research communication landscapes using innovative, statistically robust analytical approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives. Karl has a PhD in mathematical statistics and has a track record of publications in open knowledge, bibliometrics, probability, statistics, and financial risk modelling. He previously held academic roles at University of Cape Town and University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Karl’s current research focuses on developing novel models and methods for analysing differences, patterns, and correlations in bibliometric variables and bibliographic data sources. In particular, he is interested in how innovative statistical methods and large-scale data science can help map global open knowledge landscapes. Recent high-profile research outputs include examining the impact of open science policies on research institutions<https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.57067> and understanding how open access increases the diversity in citation patterns of research outputs<https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7081036>.

Rebecca N. Handcock (@BecHandcock)

Rebecca Handcock is a Spatial Data Scientist with a PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto, Canada. Her research ranges from using remote sensing and sensor networks to monitor agriculture and water, research evaluation and bibliometrics, and recent projects quantifying plastic production and use. Rebecca previously held roles within Australian and USA universities, and for a decade was a Senior Research Scientist with CSIRO. Rebecca is enthusiastic about outreach and mentorship for women in STEMM disciplines, and in 2019 was part of the largest all-women expedition to Antarctica through the global Homeward Bound leadership program.

Rebecca joined the Curtin Institute for Computation<https://computation.curtin.edu.au/> (CIC) in January 2020 as a Senior Data Scientist. Through the CIC, Rebecca works with the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative<https://openknowledge.community/> (COKI), a world-leading hub for researching open knowledge. Her role with COKI focuses on designing and implementing data analytics and visualising large datasets, and translating between the technical and applied sides of projects.
