Re-Imagining Cultural Heritage with Linked Open Usable Data

Dear colleagues,
School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, LARIS Research Seminars, co-chaired by Dr. Leisa Gibbons and Dr. Hollie White present: Re-Imagining Cultural Heritage with Linked Open Usable Data.
In the early modern world, collectors and collections brought together many different kinds of evidence for the culture and history of the past, exemplified by the wunderkammern (cabinets of curiosities). In the 19th and 20th centuries, separate types of institutions – libraries, museums, galleries, and archives – emerged, each with a primary focus on a specific type of cultural heritage material. The professions associated with these institutions developed increasingly divergent and sophisticated approaches to documenting and arranging the materials in their custody. By the end of the 20th century, the result was a series of highly elaborate, but largely self-contained, systems across which researchers – and the community more generally – had to make their own way if they wanted to understand the full legacy of the past.
