Dear LARIS students (particularly those in Perth)
I am just writing to encourage you to attend this evenings CURTIS AGM and social event (see the details below).
It is important for the well-being of LARIS that we have an effective student body. CURTIS is an important organisation that not only supports individual students but is also called upon to represent student views to LARIS; The School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry; and other university organisations (the Guild and Faculty) that have influence over student experience and the direction of courses. On several occasions this year CURTIS has been very important in representing both your concerns and those of LARIS in influential forums, including to the major School review that was undertaken, and in providing representation on the Advisory Board that is the crucial link between LARIS and industry. It was notable that the Report of the School Review commented favourably on CURTIS and recognised it as a strength of the LARIS disciplines at Curtin.
I therefore encourage those of you in Perth to make an effort to attend this evening if at all possible, and for those who can’t to make use of the options for virtual attendance. It is vitally important for the future of CURTIS that there is a quorum present.
On a personal note I hope that 2018 has been a good year for your studies. Many congratulations to those of you who are finishing your course at this point, and we look forward to having everyone else back in 2019!
Best wishes to you all.
Paul

Hello CURTIS members,
As you are all hopefully aware our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for tonight, Monday the 5th of November. We have advised members via email and invited members through a Facebook event and have had a very discouraging response. As current President of the club I would like to take this opportunity to implore you all to take more of an interest in the future of the Curtin Information Studies Club, as make no mistake – if we do not get a quorum of ten current student members at the AGM, and two further nominations for one of the committee roles of President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer we will have to take the necessary arrangements to dissolve the club. This would be an absolute travesty as CURTIS is so beneficial to students, and participation in the Committee has helped so many past students gain traction in the workforce, contributing to their success in obtaining employment in the industry.
The Guild has very strict guidelines to remain a Guild club, and the Committee has worked hard this year to ensure we meet the minimum number of student members to remain a Guild club. The only two hurdles left are getting a quorum for our AGM, and filling two of the four Committee positions.
I understand life is busy, but if you are free tonight between 5.30pm and 6pm please consider coming to the Tav, or joining our Google Hangout session using your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. If the half hour is all you can spare, we understand, and would rather you attend the AGM in person or online for half an hour than not come at all because you can’t spare the whole evening.
The Committee will be there from 4.30pm, and our lovely guest speaker Chloe Czerwiec, Senior Librarian (Copyright) at the University of Western Australia will be sharing her experiences on participating within various industry associations. We also have a note from Havva Teede, last years CURTIS President on how being involved in CURTIS helped her when job seeking after graduation. After our speakers, we will have a huge spread of food and jugs of soft drink supplied by the Guild (one of the benefits of being a Guild club), and other drinks can be purchased at the bar. Between 6pm and 7pm we will be holding a mini quiz, complete with prizes and we are hoping it will be a nice relaxing way to finish off the year for our members.
Our club is only small, we only just make the minimum member numbers for Guild clubs however the benefit of being involved in CURTIS is large. Our small club is part of industry leader collaborative groups, we liaise closely with industry associations such as ALIA, RIMPA and ASA, and we represent students on the LARIS Advisory Board, as well as being invited to attend Curtin Student Advisory Committee meetings encompassing the broader Curtin University future strategic direction.
Being so small, we cannot rely on others to keep the club running, if you feel as I do, that the club is too beneficial to the LARIS student experience to dissolve please attend the AGM and put your hand up for a Committee position. This is the only way we will be able to continue our CURTIS journey!
I really really hope to see more of you tonight than the lovely six or so people that have advised they will be attending via the Facebook event or email, and also thank those of you who have given your apologies. Without your support we cannot survive as a Guild club, so please please please attend if you are able. We will be posting the Google Hangouts link on the Facebook event and sending via email before the start of the AGM tomorrow at 5.30pm.
Kind regards,
Jade Bryan
President
