Hi,
This is a great informal learning opportunity and a chance to regularly network with professional peers. Come along to the first meet up on Thursday 3 May to see what it is all about.
Curtin Library is hosting fortnightly sessions for library staff and LARIS staff and students to work together hands-on at improving data and computational skills. Earlier this semester we got together in the Makerspace and coded a Trove-bot that tweeted out a different entry from Trove about Aurora Australis every 15 minutes.
The idea is that we make the sessions whatever we want them to be, to learn the extra skills that we need or want from each other. Knowing how to do this kind of co-learning and collaboration will become more valuable in the workplace in the future.
Here is the information from Janice Chan, Coordinator of Research Services, who is organising the events.

Library HackyHour is here!
Did you know data analysis and technological expertise are listed as top skills for tomorrow’s librarians<http://lj.libraryjournal.com/2016/03/featured/top-skills-for-tomorrows-librarians-careers-2016/>? Did you attend any Library Carpentry<https://librarycarpentry.github.io/> sessions last year? Are you keen to learn more, and improve your data and computational skills? Do you want to hear about how your colleagues applied their new skills to their work? Do you have a boring, repetitive task in hand and wondered how you can automate it?
Library HackyHour is an informal professional development activity where staff can share ideas, experiment, learn data and programming skills from each other. You can even contribute to the Library Carpentry training materials.
You’re invited to attend the first meetup, details below:
Where: Curtin Library Makerspace
When: Fortnightly meetup starting Thursday 3 May 2018 12pm – 1pm
Who: Library staff, Library Student Assistants, Curtin LARIS staff and students
We will use the first meetup to discuss possibilities, expectations, format, and might even throw in a show n’ tell or two!
Hope to see you there!
