Wroc=B3aw entered the competition for the title of European Capital of Cult=
ure 2016, because it has a story to tell=85
A story which is unusual, tragic and intriguing. After years of prosperity =
and development, there had been disaster at an unimaginable scale. The Seco=
nd World War left the city utterly ruined =96 both physically and spiritual=
ly. It lost citizens who had been creating its greatness for many generatio=
ns. Then new citizens arrived. Frightened, uncertain of the future, alienat=
ed. Brought together from many regions of the post-war country, for years t=
hey built their identity, creating their own culture. It took a long time b=
efore we accepted German, Jewish and Polish heritage lived here as one. Our=
s. It took a long time, but we did that. Today, we can proudly say, not neg=
lecting the achievements of our forbearers, that we have built a new city. =
With all respect due to them, to otherness and multiculturalism and to hist=
ory, we have created an open Wroc=B3aw, with unusually interesting culture =
and aspirations, contemporary and intriguing. It=92s time to show it to the=
world, to show what we consider worth sharing and what constitutes an enor=
mous contribution to the development of Europe. We want to talk about our p=
ast and our present. About how life can grow from ruins and human tragedies=
. We=92ll be telling this story throughout 2016, without complexes, aware o=
f our worth. We=92re certain our story will be interesting. And we hope it =
will become an inspiration for those who=92ll be open and listen to it.
2016 is a time and space to discuss the metamorphosis of culture =96 past, =
present and future.
It will be a holiday. We=92ll celebrate it after eight years of interesting=
, fascinating work. Our activities begun in 2008 allow for the co-creation =
of culture which is closer to people, more accessible and touching on myria=
d areas of life. We want to prove that civilization can=92t develop without=
culture.
Wroc=B3aw 2016 has created open, dynamic and friendly spaces to fulfil the =
need for contact with culture and art for bea. We=92re participating in a c=
omplex process in which both actions and their reception matter, because we=
need opinions to shape the programme.
We use many models =96 our cultural heritage, multiculturalism and openness=
=96 but also an awareness of innovation and the need for sustainable devel=
opment. This process transforms the city, proving that all activity is poss=
ible. It=92s transformative for us, and becomes an investment in our future=
.
Wroc=B3aw 2016 means a process. A diversity of autonomous curators and of c=
ultural environments. Building at once a programme and a chance to particip=
ate in it. And finally =96 it means many ways of understanding culture, and=
also of undertaking the shared task of developing through it.

ould like to discuss with or show to other congress attendees?
Why not present your work in the IFLA Poster Sessions?
The Congress Organisers are now Calling for Applications to hold a Poster S=
ession at the Congress that is to be held in Wroc=B3aw, Poland
from 19-25 August 2017.
Presenters of a poster will be expected to be present on Monday 21 and Tues=
day 22 August 2017 in order to explain their poster and to hand out any lea=
flets, or other information materials, they have available for viewers of t=
heir poster. Each presenter can therefore only present one poster.
Full details of the Call for Poster Session Applications as well as the onl=

Applicants are asked to describe how they intend to illustrate the project =
