Students, this would be good background to content covered in our Conservation and Preservation Unit or Archives Concepts and Practice Unit, as well.

Dear ASA WA Branch Members,
This is a notice to all Australian Society of Archivists WA Branch Members that the Annual General Meeting of the Branch will be held from 4 - 4.45pm on Tuesday 26 July 2016 in the Great Southern Room, 4th Floor, State Library Building, Perth Cultural Centre.
The AGM will include election of office bearers for 2016-2017. All committee positions are up for election and include the following:
Convenor, Secretary, Contributor to Publications, Program Coordinator, and (up to 5) Committee Members.
Agenda for this year's AGM will be sent to you next week, along with the previous AGM's minutes.
The AGM will be followed at 5pm-6pm by a talk by Professor Simon Lewis, Professor of Forensic and Analytical Chemistry and Director of Teaching and Learning in the Department of Chemistry at Curtin University.

The topic for his talk is: Contacts that leave traces: investigations into the contamination of paper surfaces from handling.

The contamination of paper surfaces during the process of handling documents is a significant issue for forensic and conservation scientists and the issue of whether to wear gloves or not to wear gloves when handling documents has also been a matter of controversy in the conservation and archivist community and there is a paucity of published research in this area. But now there is a research project has been initiated at Curtin University to explore this issue by using a range of forensic fingerprint techniques to investigate the level of finger-mark contamination on paper items handled with bare and covered hands. This presentation will give an overview of the background of the methods to be used as well as presenting some of our initial results.
The venue for this talk will be the same location - the Great Southern Room. $5 will be charged to cover refreshments, please bring correct change.
