Dear Kerry

Yes, absolutely! We welcome registrations from library studies students.

We have structured the seminar day to be a professional development and networking opportunity for working librarians/council staff and literacy professionals. Therefore any library students in attendance will be doing themselves a favour by getting a head start on developing context and building contacts, putting them in good stead for future employment.

Please do contact me if you have any further queries about the day.

Best regards,

The State Library of Western Australia invites you to join us at our third annual library seminar on Thursday 1 November 2012.

In this National Year of Reading, the seminar will focus on the transformational power of literacy.

This year's seminar will appeal to public library staff, local government staff as well as those working in organisations which deliver literacy initiatives and programs in our communities. You will hear from inspiring speakers, learn new approaches and have the chance to catch up with associates and friends (and meet new ones!).

This is an unmissable professional development opportunity for those who are passionate about helping others develop what we consider to be the most important life skill.

Download the registration form here http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/whats_on/library_seminar_2012 and register soon to secure your place.

Date: Thursday 1 November 2012
Time: 9.00am to 4.00pm
Cost: $99
Includes: morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea
Registrations close: Thursday 25 October.

[2012 Library Seminar]

SPEAKERS

Louis Ferrante
Louis Ferrante is a former mobster from New York who transformed his life by learning to read and write whilst serving almost a decade in prison. He is now a motivational speaker and the author of Unlocked, a remarkable and moving memoir describing his journey from a life of crime to that of a professional writer.

Judith Parke
As the former Project Director of the National Literacy Trust in the United Kingdom, Judith Parke led the National Year of Reading UK, 2008. As well as developing programmes and securing funding, she worked on an initiative with schools and libraries across the UK to engage disadvantaged children with books and reading.

Kate Barry
Kate Barry manages the eSmart Libraries program, as part of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. Her presentation will outline this new project regarding cyber-safety and its implications for Western Australia's public libraries.

In response to feedback received after last year's seminar, we have also scheduled some smaller, interactive workshops during the day. Please see the program via the above web-link for more information.

We look forward to seeing you at this most important event in the library calendar!
