Dear students
Curtin University is participating in a national research data
management initiative and some of the staff in our Department will be
involved in it. There is an opportunity for at least one (there could
be more) student research project to commence in semester 1, 2011,
under our supervision.
The major project is to improve the use and management of research
data. The project is partly funded by the Australian National Data
Service (ANDS). Project objectives are to develop a policy framework,
streamlined processes and infrastructure for capturing valuable
descriptive information about research outputs; and seeding the
Australian Research Data Commons with descriptions about past research
outputs. The proposal is to link existing systems that contain
information about projects, publications and research data (primary and
secondary) and generate useful descriptions about research data
collections for voluntary submission to a national registry, without the
need to rekey this information. Curtin University is participating in
Seeding the Commons to input descriptions about existing research data
collections into Research Data Australia (the data commons). The
University is also developing a Data Capture project to automatically
generate descriptions for new research projects and provide a pathway
for submission to the data commons.
The research student/s will not be paid, rather undertake an element of
the above major project as part of their research studies. If you are
interested in participating you will be invited to an information
session. You will be provided with an overview of the proposal and an
opportunity to answer any questions you may have. Following the
information session you will be ask to provide a CV and, if relevant, an
idea about what you would like to research.
Please email me by cob Friday 15th October 2010 if you are interested in
learning more about this possibility. You will need to enrol in the
research project unit/s of the Masters of Information Management, or
honours for the BA (LCIM) starting semester 1, 2011, to participate. I
am not sure how we would manage an interstate enrolment as there are
local meetings to attend, but if any interstate students have a burning
passion to do this work, please let me know and I will find out if such
is possible.
Regards
Kerry
