The opportunity presented (below) from the Uni of Melbourne might be a
very good chance for some practical experience for Melbourne based
students.
Best wishes,
Paul

The Student Projects Program, Cultural Collections, University of
Melbourne is currently looking for interested students. In 2010, most
of the projects are collections management based and engage with many of
the 32 collections of the University including the University of
Melbourne Archives, Special Collections at the University Library and
the Baillieu Library Print Collection, Ian Potter Museum of Art and
Medical History Museum.
Placements with the collections are ongoing throughout the year, so you
can contact the Co-ordinator at any time. Please note that some
projects are very popular and it is worth expressing an interest early.
"The Student Projects Program provides you with the unique opportunity
to become involved with the University's thirty-two cultural
collections. The collections themselves are diverse and include museum,
art, archive, library and science collections, the majority of which
relate to the various disciplines that have historically been taught at
this university.
Under the direction of curators, archivists, librarians and collection
managers, you will be able to work on a collection management project
that directly engages with one of the collections... The projects this
year will include cataloguing, exhibition creation and interpretation,
research, significance assessment, conservation management and archives
and records management.
You may choose to undertake a placement to satisfy your course
requirements (such as an internship subject), or you may decide to
participate in a project voluntarily to gain valuable professional
skills or simply to satisfy an interest."
