Subject: know any keen lib techs or new libns?

The Minerals and Energy Information Centre (part of the NT Dept of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources) is looking for a library technician (AO3) or a recently qualified librarian (P1) to work in the Alice Springs office for three months. Approximate dates are 6th Oct 2008 - 31 Dec 2008, but can be flexible. The person would work with a great team of geologists, and have support from other information management staff based in Darwin.

The role:

Assist in the provision of library services and information management to departmental staff and the mining and petroleum industry.

Key responsibilities:
Assist in providing an information and publication distribution service to
   staff and clients.
Manage an inter-library loan service and the receipt and organisation of
   serial issues.
Record and maintain information and data in a number of databases including
the library catalogue and an image database.
Collection maintenance activities including selective dissemination of
publishers' blurbs, weeding, updating procedures, organising physical
   collections
Provide CD/DVD burning and scanning services for staff and clients.

   Selection criteria:
A Library Technician or Librarian qualification recognised by the Australian
   Library and Information Association (essential)
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate to internal and
external clients and a demonstrated interest in satisfying client's
   information requests
A motivated attitude, coupled with the ability to cope with repetitive work
Good written communication skills, including the ability to document
   procedures
Ability to work both as an effective team member and unsupervised
Experience with office software, including word processing and spreadsheets

   Extra important information:
Any relocation expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.
As there is no public transport in Alice Springs, applicants will need
      their own transport.
We (the employer) can probably assist with an initial two week's
accommodation in an onsite demountable. The applicant might find
short-term accommodation at a back-packer hostel or similar, given this is
a warm time of year, and tourist numbers are decreasing.
      Pay scales: AO3 (library technician) - $44,893 - $48,449, P1 (librarian) -
      $42,870 - $61,897

If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Saunders

If you are interested, and think you meet most of the selection criteria,
please send a brief "expression of interest" (by 23 Sept 2008) to:
