Dear Students

This is an important email for those students who will be enrolling in
or have enrolled in a unit in semester 2, 2008 that has a practicum
attached. You are required to undertake a practicum in the mid-semester
break, normally any time from mid-June to late-July 2008.

Information regarding the practicum placements is now available at:
http://info.mediainfo.curtin.edu.au/is_practicum_students.cfm

At this site you will find:

1. The Practicum Manual
2. The Practicum Application Form
3. The Curtin Insurance Form
4. The Contact Details Spreadsheet

Please read the Practicum Manual very carefully, particularly the
section on Procedures for Organising Placements as this provides
detailed instructions on the application process. You must complete and
return the Practicum Application Form (including a brief CV), the
Insurance Form and the Contact Details spreadsheet. It is important that
you read all instructions carefully and complete and return all forms
correctly so as not to delay the organisation of your placement.

Your practicum forms need to returned to me as soon as possible. The
deadline for submission is:

Friday May 30, 2008

I would prefer to receive these forms as email attachments, although
returns by post or Fax are acceptable. The relevant addresses are
indicated in the signature line below.

Please note:
* The Insurance Form must be signed and therefore must be returned by
post, fax or as a scanned copy (if attached to an email)
* Ensure you follow the correct procedure for subject lines of emails
and file names of all attachments

Please read the following steps and work out which one applies to you:

1.The relevant practicum units are:
Information Studies 102 - Information Environment - 2 weeks full-time
placement
Information Studies 302/502 - Information Theory & Research - 3 weeks
full-time placement

If you wish to apply for an exemption from the practicum placement on
work experience grounds, then you must enrol in the unit anyway as there
are other coursework requirements to complete. Please refer to the
Practicum Manual for the criteria and guidelines for exemption
applications.

2. There are some students enrolled in the coursework masters (Master of
Information Management) who are undertaking the dual qualification in
librarianship and records management/archives. These students need to
undertake TWO placements: one in a library and the other in
records/archives. One placement is attached to Information Theory &
Research 502 - mentioned above; the other is attached to another unit in
which you are enrolled at the time of the second placement. These
students need to also make application for either their first or second
practicum placement, stating CLEARLY which one it is and in which area
(library/records-archives).

3. There may still be some students enrolled in one of the two Graduate
Diploma courses who should have done a practicum placement by now but
have not, and still need to do one. They will have already completed
Information Studies 502 when it was Information Behaviour and had no
practicum attached to it. Please let me know if you are such a person
and in which units you are enrolled in semester 2, 2008. You must get
your practicum tidied away before you graduate.

4. Anyone else who does not come under the conditions mentioned above
and still thinks they need to do a practicum placement, email me your
case.

Regards

Glenn
