Subject: [Aus-archivists] Cadetship in Archives (NSW)

Cadetship in Archives
Archives and Records Management Services Reference No. 135615

Would you like to work at the University of Sydney Archives assisting
with the exciting and important development of a Guide to Indigenous
records? The University Archives holds many records about Aboriginal
communities throughout Australia in its holdings, in particular the
papers of Professor AP Elkin. The Archives is seeking the services of
an Indigenous Cadet to work specifically with these early
anthropological records.

You would be helping to improve the information the Archives makes
available to Indigenous communities and other researchers by indexing
Indigenous languages, place names and communities throughout Australia.
You would be working with photographs, field research, genealogy and
linguistic notebooks, maps and correspondence documenting the activities
of the Department of Anthropology from its inception in 1926.

It is essential that you are a strong communicator who can interact with
a diverse range of people including University staff, academics and
Indigenous community stakeholders. Applicants must be motivated and
flexible and willing to learn new skills as part of an expert team of
archivists. You will have opportunities for professional development
and build extensive professional networks.
In learning to work with archives, you will receive close guidance and
support from ARMS staff. The Cadetship provides an excellent opportunity
to enter a career in archives and/or research, and learn invaluable
skills in managing Indigenous records, archival techniques and database
use. Career prospects are excellent as there is great demand for
Indigenous archivists and the possibility of scholarships and other
support from the profession.

Open exclusively to 1st, 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students of
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, the National Indigenous
Cadetship Program (NCIP) requires you to work seven hours of work per
week for two to three years, and two week-long blocks during semester
breaks each year. As a learning opportunity in addition to your current
studies, this position is part-time and fixed-term for up to three years
depending on the year of studies completed. Membership of a University
approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new
appointees.

Remuneration package: 1st Year 70%, 2nd Year 80%, 3rd Year 90% of the
salary of $60,660 - $67,969 p.a. (which includes a base salary Level 5
$51,258 - $57,435 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's
contribution to superannuation) plus an additional study allowance.

The University of Sydney works in partnership with the National
Indigenous Cadetship Project and the Department of Employment and
Workplace Relations (DEWR).

Apply now below to kick-start a fulfilling academic career within
Australia's most prestigious University. Online electronic applications
are preferred. For more information about the role or to receive
assistance with your application, please contact Vladimir Williams on
(02) 9351 7489 or email vwilliams at usyd.edu.au General enquiries can be
directed to Nichol Hildebrand on (02) 9036 7293.

Closing date: 17 August 2008
