All interested library and information professionals are invited to:

Roadmap to future strategies: an analysis of the current library
workforce in Western Australia Associate Professor Gillian Hallam,
Queensland University of Technology

In 2006, Associate Professor Gillian Hallam led the neXus research
project, aimed to develop a better understanding of the current library
and information services (LIS) workforce in Australia. 2,346 library and
information professionals from all over the country participated in the
neXus project, providing a rich source of demographic, educational and
career data that allows a clearer picture to be built of the Australian
LIS profession and to better comprehend the close relationship that
exists between LIS education, recruitment and retention practices, and
career long learning through staff training and development.

With the question being asked, "To what extent is the profession in
Australia going to be able to face the challenge of demographic change
with the predicted shortage of and competition for skilled labour?",
Gillian will present some of the key findings from the research project.
She will discuss the characteristics of the profession at the national
level, with a deeper analysis of the responses provided by LIS
professionals in Western Australia generally, as well as by those
employed in the public, university and state library sectors
specifically.

Following Gillian's presentation, a panel of representatives from the
University, Public and State library sectors, Library Schools and
Generation Y will put forward their experiences, observations and ideas
for the future, with discussion to be opened up to members in the
auditorium. Gillian's full report will be made available two weeks
prior to her presentation.
